ANCHORAGE, Alaska Sarah Palin is trying to trademark her name.
The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate filed paperwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in November to register the trademark.
The federal office is seeking more information and examples of usage. Palins attorney said Friday that they have until late spring to provide that information.

Bristol, why does she need to trademark her name?
Bristol (famous for her pregnancy) has performed services as a speaker on the topic. She evidently want to make sure no one else starts a “Bristol Palin Life Choices Seminar Series” so she is securing that right for herself.
One would have to be an utter moron to think that there was anything wrong with a speaker (I’m speaking of Sarah now) who earns millions per year on the speaking circuit not securing her brand against those who would otherwise exploit it.
They should Copyright their names and sue every time the media uses it without their permission.
Think of the money shell make on the bobblehead dolls.
for instance Palin2012 may well be taken by a cybersquatter with a trademark Gov Palin can quickly assume the domain on hundreds like it.
Of course, I’d have advised her also to register (and use as a trademark) “Palin” because that would be more helpful at getting palin2012.net that might have been grabbed by a cybersquatter.
The process to extract such domains is quite easy.

She’s on the right track, but getting poor execution of the strategy.
Girls get pregnant out of wedlock every day....and a great many of them abort the baby.
She's trying to rectify the situation by owning up to her reponsibility and help others.
No matter what she does or doesn't do....there will be those who can only speak ill of her & constantly remind her of her unwed pregnancy.....regardless of the fact that she appears to be a conscientious, caring mom .
I just don't get some of you.....this is a 20 year old, trying to do the right thing.....
Its hard to trademark a living thing. I think there are 2 times of trademarks.
Palin provides speaking services under her brand name.
Exactly. I remember reading an article WAY BACK in 2004 about Bush buying up as many domain names as he could, in order not to have too many ‘bushisanidiot.com’ websites popping up. There are a lot of people out there who buy domain names and sit on them, hoping to sell them for big bucks later. Didn’t the guy who registered flowers.com get a BIG buyout from FTD for use of the name, complete with flowers delivered to his wife every week for life? Memory is fuzzy, but I don’t blame Sarah one bit. Now, if I ever get famous, just might trademark the name ‘mamashawna’ ;) And I promise to become a BIG monthly donor to FR if that ever happens!
I am glad she didn’t abort her child. Many young woman do not abort their children. Many young woman also go on to higher education to set an example for the child rather than using the name for money and attention. She actually DOEs have control over who she is and what she does. Don’t we all? Isn’t that a conservative principle? She chooses not to exercise that control.
Palin’s other children seem to be able to share the name without seeking fame off their mother’s name.
Ping! I was just thinking about your “self-enrichment” comment...:-)
Many young woman also go on to higher education to set an example for the child rather than using the name for money and attention.
Free market.
Conservative.
That was 25 years ago....times have changed.
Cool. Then she go all Righthaven on DU, the Zsa Zsa Post, Salon and elsewhere.
Palin is not selling that, and the name is not being used as a trademark.
We will know she has arrived when they market a Palin Chia head. LOL
It was my highly educated, wise-from-life 84 year old mother (ten kids - thirty-five grands - seven great grands) who pointed it out.
We were discussing things and palin came up. Mom said no way she's going to run...too much money to be made on the sidelines and she's going to grab as much as she can.
It wasn't a judgemental statement, just a matter-of-fact assessment based on six decades of studying human nature....and it rang true.
Yup. Plain as day.
