The BBC is reporting that Egyptian Army tanks have allegedly surrounded the embassies of the United States and United Kingdom. This comes after Israel evacuated its entire embassy staff via helicopter. This is coming in through their live blog, and further details appear scarce. The BBC is quoting an al-Jazeera cable:
2125: Tanks have surrounded the US and British embassies in Cairo, Al-Jazeera reports.
This could be a huge, huge problem. This is similar to 1979 when the Islamic rebels took the US Embassy and held hostages for 444 days.

Even worse for Obama. Carter got dumped partially because of his idiocy over Iran.

That was my first question as well. I hope they are preparing to get those folks out of dodge.

This could be very bad. Could be. Could be just the Egyptian government taking steps to protect the embassies, though. We'll see.

Yeah, I strongly suspect the Egyptian Army is trying to prevent anyone from attacking those embassies. Very smart move by whomever is giving the orders.
To: Uncle Miltie
which way are the turrets pointed?Exactly. The direction will tell us precisely who the army is backing, the people or the Iranian backed Jihadis who are chomping at the bit to take over the country.

Depends on whether the guns are pointed outward or inward, doesn’t it??

The easy solution is to have Israel evac everyone.
We’d be happy to help.

Like presidents in the past facing similar situation, Obama asked, "Where's the nearest aircraft carrier."
Unlike previous presidents, he was referring to the Chinese Navy.

The main concern for the US in these countries will be our embassies. Security should be beefed up or if we do not do that then we should remove all personnel from our embassies leaving behind a security force with the fire power they need in order to protect the embassies from invasion by rebel forces.

WTF....if they are pointing inward it depends on who fires first.

Surprised we haven’t already evacuated, given our history in the region. Seems like we should have evacuation contingency plans throughout the Mideast.

If the Whitehouse asked for the embassies to be protected like this, then they deserve kudos: it was a sensible and laudable precaution.
It'd be the first time the left ever used tanks to protect a compound.
