The U.S. is facing a "Sputnik moment" in which it must embrace investments in research and education, President Obama will say at his State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Obama, in excerpts of his speech released Tuesday evening, hearkened back to the Sputnik era, when the Russian satellite's 1957 launch set off the "space race" and a decade of intense technological development.
"Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how wed beat them to the moon. The science wasnt there yet. NASA didnt even exist," Obama will say. "But after investing in better research and education, we didnt just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs."
"This is our generations Sputnik moment," he'll add.

WTH??
“Within 25 years, our goal is to give 80% of Americans access to high-speed rail, which could allow you go places in half the time it takes to travel by car. For some trips, it will be faster than flying without the pat-down. As we speak, routes in California and the Midwest are already underway.”
I’m curious as to how many Americans will even know what the heck a “Sputnik” is. It’s a very strange analogy to make.
I couldn’t believe it....maybe a “man on the moon” moment...like....something AMERICAN...........
To have a real Sputnik moment again in the US, they’d have to teach real math and real science, give real exams that test the student’s knowledge of the subjects, and flunk all who didn’t learn the subjects sufficiently.
Sort of the opposite of what’s being done in all too many classrooms at all levels of education.
Now, I strongly believe that we should take on, once and for all, the issue of illegal immigration. I am prepared to work with Republicans and Democrats to protect our borders, enforce our laws and address the millions of undocumented workers who are now living in the shadows. I know that debate will be difficult and take time. But tonight, lets agree to make that effort. And lets stop expelling talented, responsible young people who can staff our research labs, start new businesses, and further enrich this nation.
So, we’re going to launch Barry into space and create a new junk yard for the galaxy?
We can call it the Barry Splutnuts Salvage Area.
LMFAO!!
“In the coming year, we will also work to rebuild peoples faith in the institution of government. Because you deserve to know exactly how and where your tax dollars are being spent, you will be able to go to a website and get that information for the very first time in history. Because you deserve to know when your elected officials are meeting with lobbyists, I ask Congress to do what the White House has already done: put that information online. And because the American people deserve to know that special interests arent larding up legislation with pet projects, both parties in Congress should know this: if a bill comes to my desk with earmarks inside, I will veto it.”
Ya the link of National Rail and Sputnik is they both came from a failed Soviet Empire So that is his goal, turn us into the USSR Circa 1959...
Until the first train is blown-up, or until some Democrat decides they want even more power. Forgive the rudeness, but our president is such an Obama.
The goal of federal spending under this administration is graft and payoff's to their union cronies as well as enhancing their party's hegemony over the citizenry.
Big difference
Krauthammer comment.... a Sputnik comment from the President who just killed the Space program
Second, of course, to anyone voting for Barry for anything requiring more competence than Worthless Lump of Human Flesh.

This happened before he was born, and we’re not (or we weren’t, until Bambi gutted NASA and everything else) behind on invention.
I hate the big-eared evil one but at the same time, living in the past like this, he looks pathetic and I almost feel sorry for him and his aging managers. He himself probably doesn’t even know what Sputnik was or when it happened.
But Bill Ayers and the gang are old enough to remember this and they’re clearly the golden oldies behind Bambi. They really think this will distract people from their Marxist vision, which they are using this sociopathic blank slate to project.
But Communists are always a day late and a dollar short.
plus it’s a lousy speech.
This high speed rail lie is becoming as dreaded as the global warming lie. By the way, is global warming in the speech?
Even in Europe it is so expensive people fly on Ryan Air for example, rather than take the train.
Rail works well in certain parts of Europe, but in Germany people fly/drive mostly and if you don't have a car there, you dream of getting one.
Sheesh. So we'll have this infrastructure no one uses. Like the new airport they put in the middle of nowhere in Spain.
...aren't we all!
Sputnik....He wasn’t even born....But in years to come, he would get spaced out...
