Did Sarah Palin Disrespect the Stars and Stripes? (MSM complains the flag was on the wrong side)

Swampland alum KT pointed out to a few of us this weekend something we’d missed in the already much-discussed Sarah Palin video that followed the Tucson shooting: the American flag placed behind Palin to add a presidential air to the recording is on the wrong side.

Big deal, you say? Actually, yeah. The U.S. Flag code was passed by Congress nearly 70 years ago to provide exact rules for the use and display of the Stars and Stripes. One of the many rules dictates the positioning of the flag relative to a speaker:

When displayed from a staff in a church or public auditorium, the flag of the United States of America should hold the position of superior prominence, in advance of the audience, and in the position of honor at the clergyman’s or speaker’s right as he faces the audience.

After looking again at that video, something doesn't look quite right about the flag in the background. It appears to be behind, or partially behind the fireplace...how does one place something behind a fireplace?

And even the fire place doesn't look real. It looks like a fake backdrop to me, superimposed over a flag. The flag appears to be blown by the wind, but it's an inside shot.

The whole background looks "shopped", in a video sense.

I was thinking it actually ran in the NYTimes on 09/11/01 - along with an editorial in which Ayers says that he’s only regret was that they (Weather Underground) didn’t set off enough bombs and kill enough people. I, of course, could be wrong; but that was what I’ve always thought about this picture.
