Now that Dick Cheney has opened the door to tighter gun restrictions, will President Barack Obama do the same?
That politically dicey question is playing out behind the scenes in the run-up to next weeks State of the Union. In the aftermath of the Tucson shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and federal Judge John Roll, gun control groups and some Democratic members of Congress are pushing to get the president to directly address the issue of gun violence in his speech to Congress next Tuesday, according to gun control advocates and congressional aides, who asked for anonymity.
Some Democratic party donors are also being urged to weigh in as part of a quiet lobbying effort to prod the president to finally speak out on an issue that he has studiously avoided since taking office, the advocates say.
Theres a major push to get [Obama] to say something on this, said Chad Ramsey, legislative director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a leading gun control group. Weve been told he will say something, but were not sure how strong it will be.

If he does, he will piss off a lot of people.

When Gore ran for pres in ‘00 he lost his home state on TN. The Rats attributed that loss in part to his allegiance to gun control legislation. Bamie and the Rats won't touch it. If they do, they'll wish that they hadn’t.

That perhaps we need a ban on high cap magazines. VERY disappointing.

Chronic heart problems may lead to, among other things, degraded memory and cognative functions. Sad.

His limited capacity shotgun didn’t exactly help his lawyer hunting buddy avoid getting shot in the face now did it?

Or perhaps he is trying to get Democrats to go on the record saying the same or similar things so that the dems get crushed again next election.

Okay, it’s all about compromise. We’ll support a ban on 30 round magazines if the left will support repealing the Hughes amendment of the 1986 firearm owners protection act. Allow the law abiding to own fully auto rifles without have to pay outrageous prices for one that is 25 years old!!!
To: pabianice
By all means, Dick, let's infringe the freedom of law-abiding citizens based upon a knee-jerk reaction to the deeds of mentally-deranged subhumans.
