Starbucks Workers Get Holiday Pay, Protest Anyway
1/17/11 at 7:11 PM
For most of us, Martin Luther King Jr. day is considered a holiday. But not for Starbucks workers, who up until this year didn't receive holiday pay for working on MLK Day. The Industrial Workers of the World Starbucks Workers Union spent three years lobbying to get Starbucks employees time and a half on the holiday and this year they got what they wanted.
And as is often the case, the company was loathe to give the union any credit in adding Martin Luther King Jr. Day to the list of company-approved holidays. Actually, said spokesperson Stacey Krum, in November we announced we were adding M.L.K. Day as a holiday. It is one of the most requested by our partners.
But just because the union got their way on MLK Day didn't mean that they were about to give up the fight.

And that is why you can never think that you’re done with leftists. Anything they take, or have given to them, is theirs because it was already owed to them. Then they simply start demanding the next thing that is their “right” to have.

Correction please. Most workers do not get Martin Luther King’s birthday as a paid holiday or day off. It hasn’t caught on in the private sector as much as the supporters of the holiday had hoped.

It takes a pipe wrench to make a cup of joe?? No, that's for beating up scabs, Republicans and anyone who doesn't sign the union card.
I didn't realize that Starbucks had become part of the government. After all, the only people I've seen getting it as a holiday were government employees.

Quite a long-haired guy in that image. In the real world, he should wear a hair net.

Every place I've ever seen MLK day offered as a holiday, they usually take back some other holiday somewhere else on the calendar. For instance, people who used to get Columbus Day off as a paid holiday now work on Columbus Day and get MLK Day instead.
At one time, both Abraham Lincoln's Birthday and George Washington's Birthday were separate holidays, celebrated on the actual days of their births. Now, we just have "President's Day".
My kid's school calendar is riddled with so many "breaks" and "special days" and "holidays" that he starts school a full month before Labor Day. Yet, the school year has just as many days in it now as it did when I went to school, and I suspect the labor-union approved calendar has just as many non-holiday days per year as it did in years past.

They're like the Palestinians. They have a goal in mind (destruction) and nothing will make them happy until they get it.

That’s true. I was at work all day yesterday at a small law firm and I didn’t get holiday pay. This story made me really angry.

About a year and a half ago Michael Medved did an amazing interview on his talk show. His guest was a kid with an Ivy League education who was working as a barista in a New York area Starbucks. He was also an organizer working actively to organize Starbucks under the IWW. To improve his pay and crappy working conditions, yadda yadda. Instead of using his IVY LEAGUE EDUCATION to go out and find a REAL job! Medved was incredulous.

Which frankly amazes me. By now I thought the din of cries of “racist!” would have gotten them all to cave.

What happens in a lot of places is the floating holiday.
Most people take the day after Thanksgiving, blacks take MLK day.
