Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.
Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.
"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

My first thought. Or, as another poster pointed out, Wheeler may have seen the cab passing with a phone number on its side and posted the number to his phone in case he needed it.
You're on!
Thanks for the ping!
FYI
oh no, I caught that. Reading the last paragraph of the article, is it accurate about Wheeler’s phone being found in the neighbor’s under-construction house ? - which would put the phone there after Wheeler finished using it on the 28th to post to his alumni website? or am I misreading that? I’m wondering if Wheeler was (without his knowledge) drugged as opposed to stroked? He was aware he was robbed of his briefcase and wallet and apparently lost a shoe in the scuffle and had sense of mind to carry that shoe with him. He didn’t want the police - didn’t want it public that he was in trouble - but he did very much want to find his car. There was a comment his eyes were ‘very bloodshot’ but wouldn’t that also be a result of a freezing cold night spent outside? It seemed almost, in the office building where he spent some time and several people asked if they could help him, that he was hiding? And speaking of cars, did they find his?
The news report was that they were smoke bombs.
Would a person with that training use smoke bombs?
More important: One of his intelligence and training would know that the first thing cops look for is motive.
Because of his long standing dispute and his court case, he would have been the first suspect on the list.
This is obviously a case of someone wanting it to look like he did it, cell phone and all.
I wonder if the couple building the house ran out of meney.
And do they have friends on the dark side.
I read some of Radell Smith’s articles a few days ago and IIRC she said that the cell phone had been found in the vacant disputed house, and also (again IIRC) the cab driver was quoted as saying something different... Maybe that Wheeler had contacted him in some way? I should read again.
Thanks for the ping, for some reason this really interests me.
Can you add me to your ping list, as well? Thank you!
One of Radell Smith’s articles states that the smoke bombs were rat bombs of some kind. Rodent extermination bombs.
IIRC, he was having a legal dispute with the owner of that house which was under construction.
Lots of misdirection in this case—intentional misdirection.
Thanks for the ping.
This is crazy. I would have thought he had a stoke; but maybe not. Who exactly moved in across the street from him or better yet; who knew he was having legal issues with these people across the street?
A clue right there!
Wheeler’s murder won’t be dropped if thousands upon thousands of Vietnam vets demand that it be solved!!!
Bingo!!!
Yes!
please add me to your Wheeler ping list, thank you very much
He said he had been robbed. Maybe he struggled with the robber, got slugged in the head, and suffered a concussion, and/or cerebral hemorrhage, hence the disorientation. He ended up crawling into the dumpster for shelter, and died there.
...he was 100% right about the NCAA too.
