STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.
It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.
That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

I believe there are dynamic ip addresses that do not link to an indivdual.
Also, I believe currently, this information is not centralized and it is not available to government or anyone else unless there is due cause...sadly I believe patriot act did away with necessity of warrant.
I am concerned because I believe a digital identifier would be possible to track purchases as well as political (or any other) thot. Also, in many ways, the government is inept; I have no doubt that such data bases could be hacked and our information could be stollen, modified, etc.
It is a really baaaaad idea!!!!!!!!!!!
Insanity! The decision has already been made and they’re just discussing which agency should have oversight of it. How does this cr*p keep happening under the radar?

“The announcement came at an event today at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, where U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and Schmidt spoke.
The Obama administration is currently drafting what it’s calling the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, which Locke said will be released by the president in the next few months. (An early version was publicly released last summer.) “
From this article they have a link to another article that appeared in the summer, that completely flew below the radar:

“Releasing a draft of the potential new National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (PDF) last Friday, the government is aiming to set up a system that would let people voluntarily create trusted identities to use in online transactions.
The goal, as described in a blog post by White House cybersecurity chief Howard Schmidt, is to secure and protect transactions in cyberspace through use of a special ID—a smart card or digital certificate—that would prove that people are who they say they are. These digital IDs would be offered to consumers by online vendors for financial transactions.
Looking for suggestions from the public, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has launched a Web site to elicit ideas and feedback on the NSTIC. The government plans to collect comments at the site through July 19 before promising to finalize its strategy later this fall.”
Good question, lonevoice. BTW, I love your tagline! It's so true...
.
First Obama must register all of his many aliases and Social Security numbers.....
.
I wonder if we will have to submit a copy of our birth certificate to get an internet ID?
LOL!
If this goes through then my internet will be disconnected. At that point, Their will be no sense in keeping up with what is going on in this country. The battle will have been lost. The sheeple will have surrendered.
This is how stupid they think we are.
You would think some lib talkers would be against this too. Alan Colmes comes to mind.
I wonder what his take will be?
Since you brought up the mark of the beast, are you ready for Obamageddon?
The birds dropping out of the sky sounds like the aFLOCKolypse.
Obama. Up yours!.
You gotta fork?
More government surveillance.
Obama’s Orwellian agenda.
They are already creating a government office! Talking about abuse of executive power — Obama thinks he was elected Fuhrer, not president. And they try to sell it by claiming it’s for our own good! (Rest of my comment is unprintable!)
New Govt Office to Help Create ‘Trusted Digital Identities’

“The Commerce Department, in coordination with the White House cyber security office, announced today that it will create an office within Commerce to help develop technologies or platforms that will eventually allow sensitive online transactions to be carried out with greater levels of trust.
The office will be known as the National Program Office and it will coordinate the federal activities necessary to carry out the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), a White House initiative dedicated to making the Internet a more secure environment for consumers.”
How about a prison id for Obama and his cast of characters?
This man is sick and should step down or be removed from office.
