STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.
It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.
That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

I’m sure they already have the identity of everyone who posts on this forum, especially those of us who have been here for a long time (and probably weren’t as careful as we should have been when we started posting).
It’s truly ugly to see one’s government becoming a force in one’s life and suddenly feeling it as a threat. Or perhaps realizing that it regards us as threats. For what? Ridiculing Obama? Oooooh...
I hope we can attract attention to this and stop it. This would be absolutely fatal. When Ceausescu was dictator of Romania, everybody had to register their typewriters. They had to bring them down to the police station and type a few phrases - so that the police would have a type sample in case somebody started circulating typewritten anti- Ceausescu fliers...
I never thought I’d see the modern high-tech equivalent happening here. But it’s a whole different ball-game with a would-be communist dictator in the White House.
I think I read about this somewhere. Something about a beast and a mark or some such thing!
I suspect that the internet ID was part of the “Financial Reform” bill.
Why go to Mexico. There will be diplomatic staff selling bogus internet IDs out of the back of their consulates.
Sheep dont need ID

Surely you have heard of ‘Dolly (the) Sheep’.
Also don’t forget the cow that had gotten in ND(?) and had ‘Mad Cow Disease’ and within a short matter of time they had more info on that Canadian born cow than we (in retrospect) have ever learned about the current resider at 1600 PA Ave.
“Were still trying to ID him!”
Perfect!

And a disgruntled employee will eventually make it public similar to WikiLeaks.
From what I have read, there is much info out there; however, it is not centralized by one ID. I agree with your comments:

This is not hugh and series, it is HUGE AND SERIOUS. Word needs to get out to Levin, Limbaugh, Beck, and Savage as well as Gretta and O’reilly.
Where is the ACLU on this?!?!
“What if we sneak onto the internet from Mexico?”
I get the humor, but in reality, how can they ID one who is not in the USSA, using a US service provider.
I am a red blooded southern boy American, but with no intention of returning to the USSA under Obozo.
I’m no internet expert by any means, but—isn’t this what an IP address is/does????
BIG BROTHER (AND SIS) ARE WATCHING...
Do you use Ubuntu? I’m wondering about it ....
They probably see it as a double win for them. This could be a mechanism to make some sort of sales tax easier to implement, and they also want to make it easier to keep tabs on us.
I'm sure the libs will be all for it on both counts.
Double-Plus Ungood.
“were not talking about a National ID”, I say bull$h!t and I have abridge in Brooklyn that I have title to !
I got dibs on this ID. “Suck Eggs”.

In all seriousness, this is a huge step towards totalitarianism at best, end-time tyranny at worst...Frightening and it seems to be remaining under the radar....I hope someone can bring traction to this issue.
“... what safeguards will ensure that the Gov will not track what political sites you visit, books you read etc?”
You are kidding right?
Don’t you think that IS the purpose?
If the underwhelming reaction to the FCC usurping control over the internet is any indication, the answer is no.
