When security personnel at the MacDill Air Force Base's Dale Mabry gate detained Scott Allan Bennett in April after he seemed to be intoxicated, it appeared to be just a simple case of a service member suspected of driving under the influence.
But that stop led to an investigation accusing Bennett of something far more serious breeching security at the home of U.S. Central Command which runs the war in Afghanistan - U.S. Special Operations Command and the 6th Air Mobility Wing.
Bennett, 39, is accused of obtaining base housing under false pretenses, by pretending to be an aide to Special Operations Command chief Adm. Eric Olson, and storing a large amount of weapons and ammunition in the housing he was not supposed to have, according to federal court papers filed last month by Edward Garcia, a supervisory detective with the Air Force police at MacDill.

A “turkey” for Hussein....
Yep, he is in trouble along with whomever set him up.
There is no way possible he could have done this on his own without help.
This is a serious breakdown of security....imho
This contention should have been verified before this
person was allowed on base for housing. Dang...
...sounds like $$$$$$$ kick back scam.
I fear that lots of things we have always taken for granted when it comes to security within our military are simply no longer true. Hopefully this incident will spur some pretty intense scrutiny of procedures throughout the system.
reading further on in the main article, it appears the housing personnel who authorized him housing without seeing official orders are to blame here. He sounds like a convincing liar, who threw names around and conned his way into housing. His supervisor should be on the carpet, too, for letting this con man continue to misrepresent himself. Somebody had to know something was up with this guy. The company he was contracted with should be at risk for continuance of their government contract, too. Praises to the Security Forces at MacDill who nabbed this guy and pressed further to get his housing inspected, too. Glad somebody was actually doing their jobs!!!
I am in total agreement with you.
Tell him he’s going to GITMO to never get out unless he rolls over on everyone who helped him pull this caper off.
"In April 2010, Scott Allan Bennett, a MacDill Air Force Base contractor, was apprehended by base security forces during a random base entry vehicle check. The security forces members followed established procedures and discovered legal weapons in his vehicle, but the weapons were not properly registered with the 6th Security Forces Squadron. Upon further investigation, Mr. Bennett, a military reservist, falsely presented himself on active duty status to gain residence on the installation. Once his status was verified, his eligibility for base housing was revoked. MacDill stands ready to assist local authorities."
Read the article (especially toward the end). It explains how this happened and to me it is plausible.
I have a son-in-law who was stationed at MacDill prior to his retirement last year. More and more is being turned over to non-military personnel in the interest of cutting costs. He is now employed by one of those contractors and I can't believe any money is being saved. Someone is not paying attention to what's happening to our defense and defense spending. The number of active duty military personnel is falling, but the overall cost of everything is going up, up, up.
Something’s gotta give. We are all but out of time to find a way and the will to bring spending and performance under control. Failing to do so means a complete collapse of our entire system. I am not hopeful.
If you can move from room to room, maybe sideways, squeeze thought door openings...then ...um....that’s not ‘too much’.
MAFB...my last duty station...circa ‘74...good ole days....had the most beautiful view of Tampa Bay right out of my office window.....Central Command...think they called it Strike Command in those days......sigh......
correct....but he can’t say who set him up. but he was stupid for getting drunk and caught...
Some comedy bits just can't be made up.

sounds like we let anyone and everyone into our bases.
Heckuva job you’re doing, Big SiS.
Turning over these functions to contractors to save money is a bunch of bunk. If you’re in the military, you’re already being paid. It doesn’t cost extra to put you in the housing office.
Let’s just tackle REAL waste in the DOD, such as buying a plane ticket the day before a person has orders to travel at $5000.00 + when two weeks earlier the same ticket would have cost $1700.00. Just one example but it adds up and it’s due to inefficiency and incompetence.
The services are cutting back on a lot of the type of work in order to focus on fighting wars, which makes sense.
Base housing and other types of work like that still have to be performed, so the question is whether you use contractors or federal employees. I don’t know that they really have a choice.
