Arkansas game officials probe mystery of falling birds (5,000) update.

CNN) -- Arkansas game officials hope testing scheduled to begin Monday will solve the mystery of why up to 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve.

The birds -- most of which were dead -- were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said. The blackbirds fell over about a one-mile area, the commission said in a statement.

As of Saturday, between 4,000 and 5,000 blackbirds had been found dead, said Keith Stephens with the commission.

"Shortly after I arrived, there were still birds falling from the sky," said commission wildlife officer Robby King in the statement. He said he collected about 65 dead birds

The clue is the few birds that were found alive ont he ground, unable to fly or unwilling to fly, confused, walking in circles.

Some people here have stopped observing the tradition of throwing wedding rice outdoors because they learned that birds die after they eat it. Don't know how true it is.

OR, they coul dhave been swept to too high an altitude by a strong updraft and succumb totemps or O₂ deprivation. The autopsy should be interesting. This phenomenon occurs all around the globe. The really bizarre things are fish falls, hundreds of miles away from the sea or a major lake. Water spouts have been shown to cause that one.

Happens here in Florida from time to time, fish falling from the sky.
I get robins by the hundreds in my yard in the spring and fall.
The Arkansas birds may be a natural phenomena..
