Amidst the hustle and bustle of the lame duck Congress, another law was passed that didnt quite get the same media coverage as the Bush tax extension package, the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, and the new START treaty. The Food Safety Modernization Act was not steeped in the same level of popular controversy as these other pieces of legislation. Nevertheless, its passage may affect our daily lives even more than these, and in a rather stealth manner.
Yes, the week before Christmas, the 111th Congress of the United States gave Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), quite extensive authority over food production in our country. Thats food- from the seeds that grow the plants and the animals that provide the meat and milk, to the Lean Cuisine you had for dinner.
...How will the type of food we grow and produce be controlled?
This is probably the most important issue affecting us with this new legislation because the new law is vague in its language of what constitutes a farm (Is a garden a farm?), and how the Secretary of HHS can regulate the types of seeds that are planted and fertilizers used.
....The bill was supported by huge food companies like Campbells Soup and Cargill, and industrial seed companies like Monsanto, which spent millions of dollars lobbying for its passage. Large industrial seed companies are big producers of genetically modified seeds and, in recent years, have become increasingly threatened by the presence of small organic farms, farmers markets, and the local food movement which celebrates the benefits of heirloom and genetically true vegetables and fruits, as well as organic farming methods and fertilizers. For the latter, the direct farmer to consumer relationship is what matters, and the government will be in the way.

Death Panels for the Fuhrer to control your very life and death; why not your food?
As long as our country becomes more Codex Alimentarius-compliant, I would have to say ‘yes.’

America -- a great idea, didn't last.
Europe to ban hundreds of herbal remedies
--traditional herbal medicinal products must be licensed or prescribed by a registered herbal practitioner
Soylent Green.
The food industry was too big to fail, sooooo (enter the Marxists fix it men)...
Hey they took over the Auto industry and Medical industry, what makes ANYONE think that wouldn’t also do this with the food industry?
“Europe to ban hundreds of herbal remedies”
If Juan McShame has his way the same will happen here. Better stock up on the following:
Oil of Oregano
Colloidal Silver
D3
MMS
Bttt.
To closing down the bread basket in the San Joaquin valley
of Ca to Subsidies for corn ethanol. The attacks on the food supply of the American people is out of control and must be halted.
Anyone that has shopped for groceries knows that the prices are thru the roof. Yet this government caused inflation is NOT counted in the CPA. Hidden from the news, ( or ignored).
Food, Energy, Health Care. The American people are the frog in the pot of water, oblivious to their fate.
In a pinch, and in a year or two, I could grow about half of what I need. The hard part is the meat. I don’t want critters if I can avoid it.
On one occasion, so it was narrated, Stalin called for a live chicken and proceeded to use it to make an unforgettable point before some of his henchmen. Forcefully clutching the chicken in one hand, with the other he began to systematically pluck out its feathers. As the chicken struggled in vain to escape, he continued with the painful denuding until the bird was completely stripped. Now you watch, Stalin said as he placed the chicken on the floor and walked away with some bread crumbs in his hand. Incredibly, the fear-crazed chicken hobbled toward him and clung to the legs of his trousers. Stalin threw a handful of grain to the bird, and it began to follow him around the room, he turned to his dumbfounded colleagues and said quietly, This is the way to rule the people. Did you see how that chicken followed me for food, even though I had caused it such torture? People are like that chicken. If you inflict inordinate pain on them they will follow you for food the rest of their lives.
Not exactly who should be making these decisions. (IMO)
Dems had better hope that right wing extremists do not take over the government any time soon if they give Washington DC complete control of every aspect of our lives and rip up the Constitution.
Only morons would give government bureaucrats such power over their lives not knowing who will have the power at any given time.....either that or they will have to tank the entire system before they lose both the hill and the WH.
Don’t count on the GOP to have a spine on this. Half of them think its a good idea, including presidential “frontrunner” Nanny Huckabee.
We seem to be flirting with this now.
Everyone agree that this example should be sent to each of the newly elected House members to be delivered on January 5th?
Every measure of discretion over our lives that is acquired by the government becomes a source of empowerment with which any official or bureaucrat can punish his enemies; real, perceived, political or personal, or reward his friends, supporters, collaborators or co-conspirators. It’s an absolute and universal truth, as real as the maxim that power corrupts, and as obvious and unalterable as the turning of the earth.
Very well said. Has that been written before or is it yours?
