Coming soon to a grocery store near you: Those nutrition labels slapped on everything from cereal to soda pop will soon be required on packages of meat.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday morning that the new rule, slated to start Jan. 1 of 2012, requires that 40 of the most common cuts of poultry, pork, beef and lamb include labels that disclose to consumers the total number of calories, the number of calories from fat and the total grams of fat and saturated fat.
...The rule will apply to whole cuts of meat and poultry, including boneless chicken breast, tenderloin steak, and ground or chopped meat such as hamburger or turkey, said officials for USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Service.

I’m from the government and I’m here to help................
I know where I’d stick it.....................
I guess they think we'll all be eating Steak Tartar from now on, what with the price of oil going up and the dollar value going down and the light bulbs and the rats........................
If you eat it and you live, it’s okay.
If you don’t, oh well....
That system has always worked fine.
I need no help with anything other than the origination. (which I hope is apparent) LOL
and when we ignore the labels will the bastards require us to sign a release saying we understand the ramifications of eating too much red meat and we could be disqualified from ObamaCare?
We need far more comprehensive nutrition labels on bottled water. I don’t believe it has 0 calories and 0 fat.
I also think they should provide nutrition labels for all forms of alcoholic beverage. I’m curious to know how much protein may be found in 4 ounces of Bacardi.
We also need nutrition labels on all fruit and vegetables. I mean, we have to peel off those teeny stickers from our apples; let’s just have one huge label that’s easier to remove. And darn it! I WANT EVERY SINGLE GREEN BEAN LABELED!
Now as for meat, ARE THEY KIDDING? Gram for gram, the nutritional content of every cut of meat and every animal will be completely different because, animals are like snowflakes.
You could have one pound of rump roast have one set of values and another pund from a different cow be very different.
You just made me real hungry.
That’s makin’ me really hungry Badge!
I’ll sign...........just show me the dotted line. And after my signature there will be a FU in the same tradition as: II, III. IV etc. :)
Heh, heh, you said rump roast! Heh, heh...
Yes indeed....it’s just a damn shame that we FReepers are so spread out as I cook a very mean steak...with all the blessed trimmings. MMM MMM MMM and THAT is for the steak and NOT Barack Insane Obama!
“We need to find a way to regulate the regulators.”
Agree, this is just another excuse for more bureaucratic control over out lives and ever higher taxes. The government wants us to be informed consumers but not informed citizens.
Uh oh.
You just kicked an ant hill.
So now it will come with strict instructions on how it is to be prepared with that familiar: “ It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in any manner inconsistent with its
labeling”
Hey, I saw you put that bearnaise sauce on that steak! Now, you scrape that right off! I'm watchin' you!
Actually the regulatory agencies need to just go away. I can't think of a single one that's worthwhile. Free enterprise and the unbridled marketplace works just fine.
