12. AARON GILMORE (National) to the Minister of Energy and Resources: Will the Government be moving to ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs?
Hon GERRY BROWNLEE (Minister of Energy and Resources): I am delighted to inform the House that I have issued firm instructions to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority to stop its plans to ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs. This Government, in stark contrast to the previous Government and the previous Minister of Energy, David Parker, rejects the idea that the Government knows best and must constantly meddle in the lives of New Zealanders. If people wish to buy incandescent light bulbs, then this Government will not stop them from doing so.
Aaron Gilmore: Why is the Government not going to ban incandescent light bulbs?
Hon GERRY BROWNLEE: There are a number of excellent reasons why we have not moved to ban those light bulbs. The first is that this Government believes that choice not compulsion, and the ability for individuals to make their own decisions about what sorts of lives they want to lead and what contribution they want to make to climate change, is far better than nanny State telling them what to do.
Aren't those one and the same?
Mah. Just add "lightbulbs" to the agricultural search stations already there.
In Germany: “heatbulbs”
Then you can save even more money in electricity with a thrifty bulb. Indeed, if you are not offended by the light quality, warm up time, toxic hazards, or buzzing from CFLs (I am offended), then at 10 hours per day, you can save a bundle with the most efficient bulbs.
Looking at the math above that I laid out, the electricity cost of a bulb is going form most of the costs. So, when your friendly neighborhood economist (me) runs the numbers, I find that driving down the cost of electricity (while providing the quality and quantity of light you need) is the key.
Check the listing of math I showed above, and run your own numbers with a variety of bulbs. I’m all in favor of flat-out saving money. I don’t much care what technology is involved, so long as it does what I want (brightness, silence, light color, immediacy, etc.) After it meets my criteria for doing what I want it to do, then all I care about is total cost of ownership, including both bulbs (expensive or cheap) and electricity (lots or a little).
That’s conservatism, (and by happenstance, conservationism), not eco-wackoism.
For example, when we go on vacation, we leave on the ALGore 23 watt eco-wacko bulb. It is so darned cheap to run, that if you want to leave a light on for effect, but not actually use it (’cause its light sucks), then use the curlique bulb!
Perhaps some stores can “Give them away” with the purchase of an overpriced thumbtack or some such novelty.
Psst! Hey mister! Wanna buy some bulbs? They’re some good stuff, man.
read later bump!
I fall down frequently under ours and never did understand it til now. What really confirms that the stroboscopic effect is responsible is that I can walk under it with the light out, or the fan off, and never even stutter step much less fall on my butt. But with both on, splat!!! My electrician thought I was kidding him until he saw me go all wobble-kneed right in front of him, followed by a strange urge to stare at one of those old fashioned bug repellant yellow incandescent bulbs for 45 minutes.
Cool.
Lets ban everything elese because they are more ‘efficient.’
It totally depends on the conditions. If you tested in the cold, they wouldn’t work nearly as well.
I sure hope all the little girls with a new Easy Bake oven get their heat source before the end of the week.
You must be joking, right?
Did I ever say “ban?” No.
Did I ever say things didn’t depend on conditions or preferences? No.
If you wish to damn someone, damn something they actually said.
Otherwise, backoff.
in actuality - they do help with heat. As long as they're on, they produce a constant bit of heat.
I, myself, use my nearby lamp as a hand warmer while I sit here on the ‘puter.
I can't afford to keep my furnace above 62 - I wear a scarf, sheepskin slippers and a serape I made out of a lap robe. But my fingers get cold - so I periodically warm my left hand on my ever present dog curled up on one side - and my right hand, with the lamp. I kid you not.)
I have a supply of lamp oil against the potential of running out of oil before the advent of Jan.'s SS check = because two oil lamps in the living room and two in the kitchen/dining area and one in the main bathroom will keep the rooms warm - above 62!
I have my hallway and bed room and office closed off, and made ‘blanket drapes’ for the windows.
Many more years of frozen social security and I'll have to come up with even more schemes - like staying abed all day too, under the down comforter - and blankets - and a sheet on top of them to keep in more heat. And maybe get 2 more dogs? We're into ‘3-dog nights’ here now.
I beat ya - by 29 years.
Lived there 10 years, saw the trend - couldn't even hang out a wash! in a state where, weather wise, you could hang out all year. Think of all that energy that could be saved.
Not my neighbors - (we're out in the williwacks anyway) - but maybe the bulb-police on patrol.
I have heavy drapes for winter - but may make blackout drapes for year round.
I can't see with that sickly yellow light - so I'm building a stockpile - along with tens of thousands - of contraband bulbs.
They are also getting really - fair warning - to demand the new bulbs be made NOT TO FIT standard lamps - and new lamps will be put on the market. So make sure you have enough lamps to last for years.
Actually, a good item for storage in your 'trade goods' - when the time comes...along with matches, dried soups, beans and stuff
they CAN be made to last...but that wouldn't ‘keep up the economy’ now would it/
It's what libs bathe in.
Snort! =)
