ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Don Meredith, one of the most recognizable figures of the early Dallas Cowboys and an original member of ABC's "Monday Night Football" broadcast team, died Sunday. He was 72. Meredith's wife, Susan, told The Associated Press on Monday her husband died in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage and lapsing into a coma. She and her daughter were at Meredith's side when he died.
"He was the best there was," she said, describing him as kind, warm and funny. "We lost a good one."
She said a private graveside service was being planned and that family members were traveling to Santa Fe.

QBs in that era were tough, Dandy Don was one of the toughest. RIP, a great guy.
We east Texans are proud of native son Dandy Don. He was an outstanding athlete in both football and basketball and a great entertainer.
When a football game gets out of hand and I lose interest, I reach for the remote and sing “Turn out the lights” just like Don taught us. Now that has an additional meaning.
Yeah I remember that. Said something like they think they’re #1 in the nation, so funny.
Sad day in Cowboyland.
I barely remember Don Meridith at all but sorry to hear of his death nevertheless as he represented an era (of NFL football) that I look fondly back on.
My most memorable MNF moment was on December 8, 1980 when Howard and Don (I assume it was Don) announced the shooting death of John Lennon during a New England/Miami game. I can still remember how the shivers went up my spine when that announcement was made. Not that I'm personally a big fan of John Lennon but nobody deserves to be assassinated like that.
Good ol’ Dandy Don. Not the best QB the Cowboys ever had but always good for a laugh. The banter between him and Cosell was always great entertainment.
RIP
I watched that game in the living room of my house at Indiana University with my college roommates. It was Howard Cosell who told us John Lennon had been killed.
I don’t even remember who was playing that night.
Jeff and Hazel’s baby boy.... RIP
Tonight's Monday Night Football game has the ingredients to be a good one (Pats vs. Jets). ESPN really needs to honor Don Meredith as part of the telecast.

He also did a tea bag commercial. Because of that commercial, my Mom switched to Red Rose tea - think that was the brand. Mom was a real fan of Dandy Don.
Howard, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a merry Christmas. - Dandy Don Meredith
Never forgot that one.
So he has to share the stage with Aikman and Staubach, thats a pretty tough crowd to compare him to, and then say he wasn't the best.
That would be like implying Kobe Bryant is a lousy basketball player pbecause he's not as good as Michael Jordan.
Rest in peace Don Meredith...

RIP Dandy Don... Always enjoyed your color analysis on MNF. Also, you weren’t the best QB ever, but should be ranked among the toughest. You never let injury keep you down. God bless.
Thanks, haven’t heard that in years.
And thank you Don Meredith.
Nice article

50 years later, Don Meredith still has a song in his heart

Excerpt:
Smiling, he rises from his chair. His hair is gray and his legs are creaky, but there’s no mistaking it.
It’s Don Meredith.
“Hello, hello!” the supposedly reclusive ex-Cowboys quarterback bellows to his invited guest, a reporter no less.
So many questions beg, but Meredith, 71, just wants to be himself. Share witticisms. Croon country tunes. Raise his Snapple to offer a, well, colorful toast.
Football doesn’t enter the banter until Meredith is told of a nearing anniversary. On Nov. 28, 1959, he signed a personal services contract to play for a proposed NFL team that had no nickname, no coach and no other players.
