I miss Howard Cosell. He's actually responsible for getting me into watching NFL football in the first place. Now remember that during the 1970s, my hometown team New England Patriots were an absolute joke, so football was not a sport I tended to watch. But I was a big fan of Howard Cosell (from the other sports he covered) so I started tuning into MNF around 1976 or so just to hear him announce the game. Within a season or two, I became a a huge NFL fan and even to this day, football remains the only sport I will go out of my way to watch on TV (and it doesn't matter what teams are playing).

I barely remember Don Meridith at all but sorry to hear of his death nevertheless as he represented an era (of NFL football) that I look fondly back on.

My most memorable MNF moment was on December 8, 1980 when Howard and Don (I assume it was Don) announced the shooting death of John Lennon during a New England/Miami game. I can still remember how the shivers went up my spine when that announcement was made. Not that I'm personally a big fan of John Lennon but nobody deserves to be assassinated like that.

I watched that game in the living room of my house at Indiana University with my college roommates. It was Howard Cosell who told us John Lennon had been killed.

I don’t even remember who was playing that night.

“but nobody deserves to be assassinated like that.”

Mossad would disagree.
