PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Somali-born teenager plotted to carry out a car bomb attack at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in downtown Portland on Friday, but the bomb turned out to be a dud supplied by undercover agents as part of a sting, federal prosecutors said.
Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested at 5:40 p.m. just after he dialed a cell phone that he thought would blow up a van laden with explosives but instead brought federal agents and Portland police swooping in to take him into custody.
Mohamud yelled "Allahu Akhkbar" and tried to kick agents and police as the arrest came, according to prosecutors.
He was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton released federal court documents Friday that show the sting operation began in June after an undercover agent learned that Mohamud had been in contact with an "unindicted associate" in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier region.
Mohamud is a naturalized U.S. citizen who has been living in Corvallis.
According to a federal complaint, Mohamud was in regular email contact with the "unindicted associate' in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier starting in August 2009.
The complaint states that in December 2009 Mohamud and the "unindicted associate" used coded language in an email in which the FBI believes Mohamud discussed traveling to Pakistan to prepare for "violent jihad."...
Last June an FBI agent contacted Mohamud "under the guise of being affiliated with the first associate."
Mohamud and the undercover agent agreed to meet in Portland on July 30. At that meeting, the undercover agent and Mohamud "discussed violent jihad," according to the court document.
Mohamud told the agent he wanted to set off explosives at the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square, an event that occurred on Friday....

That’s the Million Dollar Question, isn’t it? This kid is straight from the slums of Mogadishu and was born 2 years before Black Hawk Down, and emigrated as a young teen. He was given US Citizenship, sponsorship and a free education, and this is what we get in return.
He supposedly babbled something about how American culture had sullied him too badly to be a suicide bomber, so he settled for setting it off from the safety of the train station several blocks away.
The Somalis have been here for years and this is probably only the tip of the iceberg for self-radicalized former Somali nationals. What scares the hell out of me is that they learn from these failures too, and some day they will find a patsy with half of a brain, and be just slick enough to escape detection by the FBI.
But God Bless the FBI on this one. I hope they got maximum intelligence and I pray they learned a lot along the way.
Just talked to a kid who went to middle school with this kid. Said he was a terrorist wannabe then and went to Mosque every day having an excuse from class. Said he was violent and always looking for fights. He was not a bit surprised.

from the safety of the GZ Mosque, where he will be well kept along with whatever WMD will be smuggled through the tunnels to said mosque...until he goes jihadi on NYC’s a$$. Of course, the US financial center will have had to have been destroyed or moved to Chicago by then.
Not just Somalis, but Saudis, Syrians, Lebanese, Libyans...why is any Moslem allowed to come here? Not to mention the Kenyans!
Channel 8 News dredged up a local that remembered this kid from 7th Grade, because he explained in detail to his class how an RPG worked. No kidding.

We should do that, for sure.
But it’s not enough to pray and hope for the best — we must take action ourselves, get rid of evil (Islam) first and our prayers will be heard as a result.

I’m gonna take an unpopular position: I think the FBI groomed this idiot in order to produce good PR for the FBI. There was no need for the plot to go as far as it did, nobody to catch besides the guy they’d already caught. If the object of the exercise wasn’t making the FBI look like they’d ‘saved’ Portland, what was it?
I think I’ll take the popular position, thank you for your comments...and say that they aren’t comprehensible.
For one thing, they had to wait for the kid to try to detonate the “explosives” to have a makeable case against him. It’s kinda like the FBI agents who pose as kids to trap pedophiles. They have to have actionable proof. Did you know that they tried to talk the kid out of it?
Too, why would the FBI do that in a city that has rejected being part of the Terrorist Task Force? Were I a member of the FBI, I would say let them burn, and let them come to us for help.
In that case, the only charge brought against him will be that of trying to detonate them. Somehow, I doubt it.

There never was any danger of Portland 'burning', so grooming the kid as an object lesson makes sense. Portland will now probably rejoin the Terrorist Task Force.
