I agree completely with your assessment.
I suppose they are stuck between a rock and a hard spot. Can't justify constant surveillance of a potential jihadi forever, so this type of sting plugs a budget black hole while producing positive PR that can be used to justify the budget (or a budget increase).
I'm just glad their little "black ops" didn't blow up in their faces like it did at Waco and Ruby Ridge.
They gave him plenty of opportunities to take another path...to not do what he was planning on doing.
His dad was so concerned that he contacted the FBI.
What part of crazy nutjob kid don’t you understand?
For goodness sakes...he thought the people who were throwing themselves off of the World Trade Center on 9/11 was “awesome”!
I'm sure he could have been busted for something (there's always 'conspiracy') early on. But then the FBI wouldn't have had a chance to cover itself with glory.
“But don’t you think he had some help getting from there to ‘willing would-be mass murderer’?”
Yep...he was in an environment that allowed him such freedom and, in fact, encouragement.
I don’t know where you live, but Oregon is very open to new people, new experiences, and any religion other than Christianity. They, in fact, have been so sympathetic to the Islamic religion that we’ve had the Portland Seven, one of whom was an aid to the Mayor and another who was an exec with Intel, and attempts to set up terrorist training camps.
The city of Portland decided to be the first city to opt out of the JTTF. They ended up being the ONLY city to opt out. It appears that the city council is now open to joining the JTTF now that Obama is President, and not Bush...and the fact that there was a threat. All except Randy Leonard, who remains to be the ultimate example of the left fringe.
I thank God that the FBI did their good work here.
