PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Federal agents in a sting operation arrested a Somali-born teenager just as he tried blowing up a van he believed was loaded with explosives at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, authorities said.
The bomb was an elaborate fake supplied by the agents and the public was never in danger, authorities said.
Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested at 5:40 p.m. Friday just after he dialed a cell phone that he thought would set off the blast but instead brought federal agents and police swooping down on him.
Yelling "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great!" Mohamud tried to kick agents and police after he was taken into custody, according to prosecutors.

My sister is in downtown Portland OR a lot! She was also frequently in the Home Depot near DC where the Islamist sniper nailed one of his victims. I suspect that more and more Americans are being personally touched by these attacks whether successful or thwarted and wondering why the FBI can profile for months in advance (well, establishing probable cause, but obviously keeping a close eye) to prevent these bomb attacks, but more aggressive profiling can't be employed in airports.
Do we have to wait for an overt act by these noobie terrorists to establish probable cause when it is obvious that being Muslim establishes probable cause that a person has been exposed to terrorist ideology in the words of the Koran justifying and requiring a higher level of law enforcement scrutiny?
Why are there any of them in this country? They can’t be trusted even after they become citizens.
This was not a Jewish boy from Brookyln, NY? I thought that all Jews like all Amish from Iowa were terrorists.
The story says he is an American citizen. He should be strung up for this.
It started with Sirhan Sirhan and RFK, if not before!
Is this going to be another “teaching moment?”
Mohamed Osman Mohamud...of the singing Osman family of Somalia (The Doudy and Marwi Show).
Sirhan was manipulated by mind control(West), these other guys it’s just regular CIA & FBI.
I love the “teenager” stuff.
Yeah, he’s just like Dobie Gillis. He only did it to get noticed by Marsha Brady.
Oh Lord. I am again reminded that “Our Diversity Is Our Strength!”
Why are there any of them in this country? They cant be trusted even after they become citizens. ........................... The one who can answer that question died this past year. He was called Teddy if I remember correctly.
Read “Nemesis” by Peter Evans. Evans is a widely respected English reporter.
The book lays it all out.
My apprehension is due to your grandmother having her breasts rubbed by a TSA agent in the Detroit Airport.
In fact, it pisses me off.
I would feel much safer if they took this kid and waterboarded him for info and then shot him in the head.
I have suspicions of my own in this vein. We had the Islamonutball here in Dallas who wanted to blow up Fountain Place, a big building downtown. They can’t all be dumass enough to try and buy their explosives from the FBI. It’s the ones out there who aren’t stupid that worry me, and you know they are among us.
Dang! Fooled again! I would NEVER suspected someone named Mohamed Osman Mohamed to pull such a trick. I had my money on the 80 year old grandma using crutches! Fooled again! Sarc!
Dang! Fooled again! I would NEVER have suspected someone named Mohamed Osman Mohamed to pull such a trick. I had my money on the 80 year old grandma using crutches! Fooled again! Sarc!
Comment from Oregon Live site: “Ya, except in Portland, “street justice” means that we buy you a new pair of Birkenstocks and a rainbow bumper sticker. Ohh, and a fresh bag of granola to help you on your way.”
Too true.
Actually, if you read the story closely, this kid had reached out to terrorist types. I think that is what drew him to the attention of the FBI, not profiling. It would be nice indeed if the FBI was profiling Somali immigrants, but I wouldn't cite this story as evidence that they are.
