Actually, if you read the story closely, this kid had reached out to terrorist types. I think that is what drew him to the attention of the FBI, not profiling. It would be nice indeed if the FBI was profiling Somali immigrants, but I wouldn't cite this story as evidence that they are.
Bottom line is that they were able to sift through the hundreds of thousands of 19-year-olds with delusional mania in the US and identify this Islamist terrorist-intender.
What continues to be suicidal on our part is the incredible amount of resources that where devoted to coax this one potential terrorist into taking an act sufficient to justify arrest. How may other terrorist intenders could have been identified and rendered harmless at far less cost if the ACLU and extremist coddling jurists weren't insisting that these terrorists are entitled to US citizen protections rather than being treated as self-appointed enemy combatants?
