What Happens if You Decline a Full Body Scan?
aol ^ | Nov 15th 2010 | Fran Golden

When you ask a friend to join you for a nice weekend cruise from Miami, you don't expect the friend to be hauled away by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents into a private room where she says she was practically strip-searched. But that's what happened at Logan International Airport in Boston...

I looked over to the adjacent security line and saw to my horror my red-faced friend questioning TSA officers after she was chosen at random for, and refused to go through, a full body scanner.

My pal happens to be a Boston media personality and crime reporter, Michele McPhee. She is not a shy lady. When this tough blond makes up her mind she makes up her mind. There was no way she was going to be convinced to do a body scan if she didn't want to.

So instead, she opted for a pat down and was whisked away, barefoot, by two women - a TSA officer and her supervisor - to a private room, where McPhee says a very intrusive body search was conducted.

"They run their hands inside your leg and under your bra strap and patted the front of my breasts," she says. "If someone had done that to me at a nightclub I'd call the cops."

"People need to know why we need body scanners," she says. "The humiliation of walking across a crowded, dirty terminal in bare feet, escorted by two TSA agents, dragged into a room and essentially assaulted, I really did leave mad."

>>>How many airports does El Al run in comparison to the U.S. What is their flight load/capacity daily?

Ben Gurion airport has about the same passenger volume as a regional airport like the one in Sacramento.

>>>I just wonder how we would have to adapt it for U.S. use based on volume.

The Israelis have been refining this for years and I don't imagine these are skills that are easily handed off. We would likely need dual practices for several years before we were at their capabilities across the entire US.

I don't want to go through the body scanner because it's radiation, it's an Xray machine. And the people running the machines are not radiologists or trained technicians.

And, how do we know that the person patting us down is not some sort of pervert they "mistakenly" hired?

And, how do we know that their isn't some guy by himself in a back room somewhere getting his jollies off?

And, now they are unionizing?

It is all about CONTROL.

What is next, disinfectant?

Why don’t you post a naked photo of yourself on this forum? It’ll do about as much good as going through a full body scanner at an airport.

A full body scan would have detected the bomb that was unsuccessfully detonated on a flight from the UK to Detroit this year.

I fly a lot (over 150K mile this year) and I'm cool with doing away with these searches (except in Japan, they gotta lotta nice girls there), but what I think is low down wimp city is a bunch of people demanding these searches be done away with, and then they want to blame the government if something bad happens.

And yet the TSA declares that the burka/hajib wearing Islamists are exempted from both the scanners and the pat downs.

Besides the legitimate objection of personal rights, some of us have deeper concerns. I was pimped out by my step father to his friends who sexually assaulted me. No one touches my private parts except my husband and my ob/gyn. I'm certainly not going to let the therapy I endured to get some semblance of normalcy be undone by minimum wage feds because our government refuses to call the enemy the enemy.

TSA intimidation tactics is the ONLY reason for the frisking. They are trying to break us. Pure and simple. Strong arm intimidation. Nothing less.

Please descibe what El Al does (with some detail).

They have now made it so someone like me can no longer fly.My insulin pump and 24 hour gluclose monitor can not go through the scan nor an xray. The insets that are on my body make a pat down painful and dangerous healthwise if they disloge the one for my insulin pump. The bathroom on a plane is not clean enough to use to do that and I don’t really think the other passenges would appreciate my shirt being up to do that sitting there.Without my pump my blood sugar begins to rise and will be in a dangerous range within about 45 mintues.I don’t think it will be possible for someone like me to fly anymore.

No we don’t Give Up. We start using nonPC profiling like the Israelis do. If your Arab or Pakistani looking you get special treatment and the bacon test.

Stop patting down five year olds and seniors with walkers and wheelchairs

Political Correctness is going to get someone Killed

In 25,000 words or less:

TSA focuses on keeping dangerous things off of airplanes.
El Al focuses on keeping dangerous people off of airplanes.

That being said, El Al also matches luggage to passengers, and pumps all luggage down to set off any barometric triggered bombs.

I bet if you objected to the search TSA would let your luggage make the flight without you just to further inconvenience you...

A pilot from Skywest was going through security in Denver with his 18-year-old daughter and overheard a TSA officer saying into his headset, “heads up, got a cutie for you.”

If something bad happened, I would blame the Muslim terrorists and the foreign governments that support them, NOT the American authorities.

As for the “panty bomber” apprehended by passengers on the Amsterdam to Detroit flight last Christmas, his own father, a prominent citizen in Nigeria, warned the American authorities that his son was a potential terrorist. The American authorities did nothing. His name should have been on a “no fly” list available to the airport authorities in Amsterdam (and every other city).

How many commercial aircraft have been "blown up" since 9/11 (nine years ago) under the security procedures used up to now?

How many Amtrak Passenger trains, with virtually no security procedures, have been "blown up" since 9/11 ?

How many NFL stadium events, with no radical security procedures in place, have been "blown up" ?

Why are there not simply police (of some sort) on commercial aircraft like any other assembly?

Given that the commercial aviation operation is little different than any other mass assembly why the paranoia and obsessed technical reaction directed exclusively at air travel?

Why isn't Greyhound Bus subject to body scanners?

Where is the TSA on Manhattan or Bay Area commuter ferries?

What is, and has been, the safest mode of distance travel in the US?

Given that each and every one of us is going to die from some medical or traumatic complication, why is smoking, or trans-fat, selected as any more legally abhorrent than any other affliction?

Is it true Michael Chertoff is invested in body scanners?

Just wondering.

The solution is simple:

Mandate the same choice of pornographic, databased nude body scan OR sexual molestation for...

Private Jets.

This problem stops THE DAY this is implemented.

And there's NO DHS-Level DEFENSE. You telling me one of these can't be used by a suicide bomber?

No arguments from me. I believe in their system..Lots on here don't realize the full potential of such a setup and how it can do a BETTER job than just scanning a DB for a "no fly list" entry by "some" other agency.

Personally (and I know I'll make some heads explode with this one), I wouldn't mind seeing a Blackwater type organization taking over airport security; let them profile away and I'd bet they would do a better job for that bottom dollar vice being funded for an entire year and resting on laurels.

Them doe eyes must be staring at the headlights.

Just like the Isrealis, PROFILE. If you look like a terrorist or are from a terrorist country or have spent time in a terrorist country, scan or feel em up everyway from Sunday. The rest of us, metal detect and explosive sniffer is OK. No more NO SHOES or TINY LIQUIDS.

The sole reason for some much TSA PC security is because of Affitrmative Action, doesn’t Thousands Standing Around look remarkedly like the Post office, except a busload at each gate?
