A native woman kidnapped by the Vikings may have been the first American to arrive in Europe around 1,000 years ago, according to a startling new study.
The discovery of a gene found in just 80 Icelanders links them with early Americans who may have been brought back to Iceland by Viking raiders.
The discovery means that the female slave was in Europe five centuries before Christopher Columbus first paraded American Indians through the streets in Spain after his epic voyage of discovery in 1492...

Short answer: yes they do.
A firm called Decode Genetics assembled a genetic map of the entire Icelandic population a few years back, since the family relationships of every single native Icelander are well documented and they purchased enough genetic information to generate DNA profiles for every Icelander.
There are about 300,000 Icelanders and they are all descended from the well-documented 40,000 person Icelandic population of 1800.
That group of 40,000 are descended from a group of probably no more than 4 or 5,000 who survived the Second Plague of 1495.
Pretty much every Icelander can track their complete family tree to at least that date.
Nice pair of knees.
Thanks for the ping!
wow, interesting.
I’ll say this, someone coming to your village who is clearly not from the area but has the means and power to travel great distances is a “rock star” compared to the locals. It certainly isn’t hard to picture some woman going for a traveller.
Maybe it was an early fuller brush salesman.
Perhaps, but the dark hair and eyes, scant body hair, and facial shape of Amerindians still resembles Asians moreso than Europeans.
Icelandic people are fascinatingly odd.
“They found a genetric trait and have already determined that the native American was enslaved and producing babies. Were the babies also enslaved as in America? Is there a recorded history of Native American slaves in Iceland being sold 1000 years ago?”
I don’t think anyone disputes that the Vikings routinely conqured people treated conquered people’s women as chattle.
I mean, that was their gig.
Continuing the “Evil White European” stereotype that they always enslaved peace-loving, living-in-harmony-with-nature natives wherever they landed.
News we can use . . .
thanx brits
Don't tell me! Now some Vikings will be looking to open a casino here based "Indian" blood rights.
Possible but also possible is that the Indian(s) went to Iceland on their own.
There is a historic record of Vikings, an ocean going people, going from Iceland to Greenland and America (Wineland).
There is no similar record of any ocean going Native Americans traveling around the North Atlantic.
They found a genetric trait and have already determined that the native American was enslaved”
This is all made up. All they know is that the DNA is there. For all they know, and Viking brought back a native wife from one of the settlements in Greenland or Newfoundland. The article is sensationism and inherently dishonest.

How do we know the woman was kidnapped? Seems like an assumption that fits a perception that the America’s were a paradise and the Europeans were fully evil.
Didn't the Norse colony on Greenland fall to the Inuit in the late Middle Ages? I seem to remember the "Skraelings" invaded the island.
Next thing you know they’ll start using Indian nicknames for their sports teams - the horror!
