Toledo, OH (WTVG) -- Some parts of the Safety Building downtown were under quarantine Tuesday evening as several police officers underwent decontamination by hazmat crews. It began as a domestic violence 911 call to the 4700 block of Douglas. Responding officers found some highly toxic chemicals inside the home. Toledo police say officers seized mushrooms and a cultivation of castor beans, used to make the chemical ricin. Hazmat was called. As a precaution, the half dozen officers exposed to the chemical underwent a decontamination process. None exhibited any signs of abnormalities. FBI agents from Detroit are on the scene and federal agents have landed in Toledo from Virginia. Police are not releasing many details on the investigation. Thomas David Wineinger is in custody, but there is no word on what charges he may face.

I saw this on the local news this morning too (I live outside of Toledo, OH). But this is local news, not breaking national news.

...Police said they were called to Wineinger's home about 3 p.m. Tuesday by a woman who said she feared for her life, telling officers that the threat was coming from her husband...
...The woman then came out of the house and led them to the drugs that included what police said were mushrooms and a bi-product of the chemical ricin.
Handsome dude.

Any indication of what sort of mushrooms these were? Hallucinogenic or poisonous?
Maybe the guy’s been reading too many Agatha Christie novels. Those are exactly the sort of flora that her poisoners use.
Does anybody just eat castor beans? Like a tasty castor bean salad?
Or are they just basically for making chemical WMDs?
The Castor is a popular domestic plant. If you have patience, you can get beans, and with a good supply you can make castor oil. You can also make ricin, and the cookbook for that is everywhere. It had a particular run of popularity on nazi sites a while ago. The process is remarkably easy.
Hmmmmmm....
Castor oil has been used for decades as a food additive and medicine.
Castor beans used to be used as a poison to get rid of moles in the yard. People grew it, specifically for that purpose.
Castor oil makes a great two-stroke/glow fuel lubricant. I run it in all my two smoke engines.
And it has a nice exhaust aroma!
People plant them in their gardens just to look at. They have green and bronze leaves and red flowers. In the picture above, it's the tall spikey leaf plant. Just don't have them in your yard if you have kids or pets because the seeds/beans are poisonous. And don't grow them if you think you might be on government watch list.
I know. At first I was thinking it was going to be a Muslim. Toledo is very close to Detroit, Michigan.
I just hope the guy is not connected with a militia.
