US drops Amritsar from Obama itinerary over headgear worries
Times of India ^ | 20 October 2010 | Times of India, New Delhi, India

Posted on 10/19/2010 8:03:30 PM PDT by AmericanInTokyo

NEW DELHI: US President Barack Obama will not visit Amritsar during his stay in India next month. While there was no official confirmation from the government, sources said the proposal to visit Amritsar had been dropped owing to reservations of US officials over the kind of scarf Obama would have to wear to visit the Golden Temple.

The decision was yet to be communicated to the government till late on Tuesday. However, sources said Obama, who will arrive in Mumbai on November 6, will directly come to Delhi now after a day's stay in the country's commercial capital. Earlier, he was to fly to Amritsar from Mumbai for a brief visit to the Golden Temple.

Sources said a team of US officials, which visited Amritsar last month, had expressed concern that Obama wearing the traditional headscarf might lead to "misinterpretation" that he is a Muslim. The US is wary of giving any such impression.

Sikhs do temples, not mosques. :)

And then there’s this: zero has now insulted the Sikhs, which pleases the muzzies greatly. Perhaps that was the plan all along. This is not the first time he has insulted India.

Sikhism originated in Punjab (now part of Pakistan) in the 15th century and one of its founder’s important sayings was that “now there is no Hindu and there is no Muslim,” since the two groups had traditionally been in conflict in that area. Much of its philosophy is Hindu, although it is monotheistic and has some Muslim cultural touches because of where it originated.

There was a Sikh separatist movement in India and Pakistan, but I don’t know if it’s still very important. The Indians stormed the Golden Temple after it had been occupied by Sikh separatists, and this led to the bombing of a Canadian Air India flight in 1985, although I’m not sure where the separatist movement stands now.

I was wrong it can’t be a hat it has to be: “All visitors to the Sikh temple are to first remove their shoes and socks and enter the temple only barefoot. They are also enjoined to keep their head covered.Sikhs will wear the turban or a small under turban called the patka. Non Sikhs can enter by covering their head with a handkerchief or cloth or scarf. No woman is to enter the temple without covering her head. Even the Prince Charles had entered the Golden temple at Amritsar with his head covered.”

Looking at the pictures of Stephen Harper, Canada’s Prime Minister http://s.www.sikhnet.com/files/news/2009/November/Harper-1.jpg It doesn’t look like a turban. It looks more like a doo-rag that you see a lot of young African-American men and boys wearing. Others who wear doo-rags are motorcyclists.

The real back story is that Obama’s handlers could not get his head out of his @ss to fit him with the appropriate headgear.

The temple is revered by Indians of all faiths. It is a cherished emblem of India’s religious diversity.

I believe it isn’t the headgear that is causing the problem. He doesn’t want to be seen as remotely worshipping any god, therefore he does not want to attend the temple.

He has to keep up the pretense that he is a Christian.

We all know that obama is a muslim anyway!!!!

It used to be easy for pundits to dismiss people who say that obama is a muslim as “wingnuts”. But as time goes on, more and more people realize the obvious truth that obama is a muslim. Now it’s up to 20%. By the end of the year it will be substantially higher, and it will get higher and higher with time. The emperor has no clothes!

Whether obama wears a scarf in the Sikh Golden Temple or not is irrelevant. We all know that obama is a muslim!!!!

There was a time that people American presidents and British heirs to the throne would not get up in the ritual clothing of other cultures. It would be understood that they are just visiting the culture and were separate from it. If the culture wanted a visit they would waive the requirements.

On turbans:

Turban over the ears, no need for fears.
Ears showing, Danger growing....

That is something I just made up, but it is a good rhyme to remeber when you see someone in a turban.

(Sikhs wear a turban over the ears, ROPers don’t)

[ The Sikhs I know, who are extremely nice, wear turbans. I guess there is some kind of trick to winding them properly. ]

When you go against the grain of the hair and don’t cover the ears it tends to make someone really really cranky.......

Sikhiism may draw it's philosophies from Islam and Hinduism, but it is NOT part Moslem and part Hindu.

Yes, the violence for Punjab was there, but since Sikhs tend to be an ethno-religious group (i.e. nearly all Sikhs are Punjabis but not all Punjabis are Sikhs), it's a bit difficult to separate it from a regional struggle (which has ended by the way completely and India now has an elected Sikh Prime Minister who rules the country).
