A backlash against China's powerful presence in the Zambian economy has been triggered by an incident in which 11 miners were shot by Chinese managers.
Police said that the Chinese executives opened fire on workers protesting against poor pay and conditions at the Collum coal mine in the southern Sinazongwe province on Friday.

You have a point there. It’s an impressive thing to think that the Chinese young are so patriotic that they would enjoy spending time with their military. I think that too many FReepers take a ‘noble savage’ view of the Chinese.

Which is exactly what they are going to do. I think that Africa will be the new frontier. Sad thought, with the Africans as the ones who get either wiped out or shoved onto reservations.
Obama and his cohorts are too STUPID to think that the Chinese will work with poeple who share the skin color of the people they are slaughtering.
I had read once that a young African American female returned from a trip to Africa. She said something to the effect that “We weren’t kidnapped baby, we were RESCUED!”

Not too sure this is the worst evil. Keep in mind that Zambia was a country where up until the late 1980s there was no functioning national infrastructure and human cannibalism was being routinely practiced.

I spent a few months in Zambia in 1983. It was a real mess with Dr. Kenneth Kaunda as president for life. We looked south to Zimbabwe for a picture of what Africa could be like. Fast forward 25 years, and now Zambia is a guiding light compared to the chaos that is Zimbabwe.
After reading the story in detail, I definitely think it’s better with the Chinese there.
The coal mine workers had their work hours cut short due to lack of demand. So they started rioting and throwing rocks at the managers offices which then led to the shooting. Clearly the Chinese managers were wrong to do it, but it’s not entirely unjustified.
Moreover, there is something deeply ironic about Zambians railing against Chinese oppression and racism, when literally everything from their roads to power plants hospitals to mines to farms are only running because of the Chinese presence in Zambia. If the 100 thousand or so Chinese specialists left the country, Zambia would collapse into anarchy and lawlessness.
