A former housekeeper for Meg Whitman was "emotionally and financially abused'' during her nine years of employment, an attorney alleged today, adding that the Republican gubernatorial candidate knew the woman was an illegal immigrant.
"In short it was a nightmare,'' said attorney Gloria Allred, who said Nikki Diaz Santillan worked as a housekeeper for Whitman for nine years before she was fired last year.
Allred said that during the woman's years of employment, Whitman caused her "to feel exploited, disrespected, humiliated and emotionally and financially abused.''
"The relationship was terminated last year by Ms. Whitman for what appeared to be political reasons involving Ms. Whitman's decision to run for governor,'' Allred said.
Allred contended that Whitman knew her client was an illegal immigrant, but kept her employed until she decided to run for governor.
Tom Hiltachk, Whitman's attorney, denied the allegation.
"This person was initially hired by Meg Whitman in November 2000,'' Hiltachk said in remarks reported on the Los Angeles Times website. "She filled out standard (Internal Revenue Service) forms and Department of Justice forms and presented her Social Security card and California driver's license. She filled out immigration forms that stated under penalty of perjury that she was a lawful resident.''
Hiltachk said the woman admitted in June 2009 that she was not a legal resident.
"She was immediately suspended and terminated on June 29, 2009,'' he said.
Whitman spokeswoman Andrea Jones Rivera said Allred's news conference was politically motivated. She called Allred "a shameful manipulator'' who is a supporter of Jerry Brown -- Whitman's Democratic opponent in the hotly contested governor's race.
"With the polls tied, it comes as no surprise that the morning after a successful debate for Meg that the sleaze machine of the political left is now focused on the politics of personal destruction.''
If you were using your brothers ID, yet lived at a separate address, with separate banks, accounts etc, why would the SSA and IRS not know this? How could two people with the same SSN live at separate addresses and have separate sets of documents, bills etc?
The illegal was using her sisters ID.
lol....
The fact is that hiring illegals is illegal...even in California.
We'd be better off if they all decided to boycott us and leave the USA. Think of the job openings.
I don’t know what you wrote in that language, but Star Wars Galaxy Translator spit this out: “Jabba the Hutt’s daughter”
Is that an accurate translation?
My understanding is Whitman had to fill out the 1099 which included the bad SSN.
I absolutely agree.
"Oh, it's not my fault, they were sub-contractors, she was 1099...Oh they were sent from the employment agency...I'm innocent"
We've all heard this a million times.
The sh*t is pretty deep in regards to this little con-game.
Oh, ok that makes sense, I guess the maid was pretty clever then.
Which is it?
Is this a mistake?
Jerry Brown is unfit for office — any office. He’s made it to nearly retirement age (and I didn’t check) without ever having held a job.
This is no laughing matter. Whitman is not the problem. The USG is.
I am with you all the way on that. It is their own fault they have placed themselves in a vulnerable position by being illegal in this country. But we have the monsters who take advantage of the imbalance of power and unequal rights to deal with here.
I am sure that it there are hundreds of thousands if not over a million illegal aliens working in CA despite it being illegal. If you don't enforce the laws, they are meaningless. Remember this demonstration in LA?
what a ridiculous image of false concern and “suffering”
excuse me while I vomit!
go back to where you came from lady, and take Gloria Allred with you!
And wax her husband's Jeep.
Bitch just better not miss a spot or POW!
Is that the only three states or are you just full of crap per usual?
I'd be more inclined to think Allred is the "monster"..not Whitman.
Either way, the truth will prevail. It's a mess.
Without specifically singling out LA, I agree with you completely. ;-]
That said, if Whitman really did get all the documentation and paid the taxes and the woman worked for her for nine years (suffering brutally at $23/hr) the story makes Whitman a winner.
Meg’s not my first pick for CA Governor, but Brown would be very near my last.
