DeMint Promotes Redistributing Power to States (DeMint would dismantle many federal departments)
Roll Call ^ | 2010-09-19 | Melanie Starkey

Posted on 09/19/2010 4:41:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Sen. Jim DeMint argued for a “devolution of power out of Washington,” saying Sunday that “the fact is, education probably would work a lot better without the Department of Education.”

The South Carolina Republican had been asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether candidates whom he and the tea party movement have endorsed are too far out of the political mainstream. When host Candy Crowley gave Sharron Angle’s call to abolish the Education Department as an example, DeMint said, “She’s very bold to say it.” Angle is the GOP candidate challenging Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) for his Senate seat in Nevada.

I would support a devolution of power out of Washington for education, health care, transportation, and I’ve introduced a lot of legislation for that, too,” DeMint added, saying the power should go to the states. “And you can do it in a common-sense, reasonable way that doesn’t disrupt any of the activities that we support.”

Why not (have the Tea Party become the Constitution Party)? (If there’s currently a Constitution Party, so what? It’s not very effective, is it??)

“Tea Party should become a third party and rename itself “Constitution Party.”

Naah....Tea Party just needs to track voting records and intervene when some congresscritter starts voting unconstitutionally. Easy to do. Requires little to no formal organization...extremely effective.

DeMint at the head of the ticket, and I will come a’runnin’.

He, or a Conservative of his caliber, would cause me to rejoin the Republicans in a New York minute.

It is principle that holds us together, not party.

The logical place to start in killing the department of education is to cut all federal education funding to the States.

Without the funding the States are under no obligation to implement the Federal mandates, and the Department of Education is powerless.

So cut it all out! there will be complains, so to that end we should raise hell at the state level activity reallocating that money, or pushing the Feds into striping it from individual states.

When the democrats say we are robing kids of their education money, we will point right back at them in how they in the administration are doing the same thing.

I would say that is overly generous.

DeMint should just shut up with this killing the Dept. of Education stuff. Why give Obama’s thugs fuel to lie and distort? Pointless. Also it is far better to merely fight AGAINT what people already hate—Obama, Pelosi and Reid—than to present an alternative, controversial agenda to permit the other side to switch from defense to offense. Stupid.

And then start in your local districts, counties and states. Quit accepting Federal matching funds. Make sure your local governments fulfill their assigned functions well and efficiently before considering anything new. Keep as much power in the smallest form of government as is possible.

also, scuttle the EPA and TSA. Fold BATF into FBI or Secret Service.

Now we’re talking. I’ve said and continue to say that tax cuts are just shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. We need to cut whole departments out of the government and either eliminate them out of hand, or divide them up and return them to the states, for the individual states to fund and keep or defund and close as they see fit.

Education tops the list but it only starts the list. BLM, the park services, the forestry services, fish and game, all of these need to be handed off to the states. Even EPA needs to be divided up and handed over to the states. If you work in Washington, guess what, your job just moved to Des Moines or any of 49 other state capitals.

The US government has no business being in the land business. Federal lands need to be handed over to the states for them to do with as they will. BLM land in general probably needs to be simply privatized, sold off to local citizens.

It’s easier for the tea party to take control of the Republican Party than to take control of the country as a third party. About 10% of the voters will vote in a Republican primary (varies by state etc.) . . . but a motivated group has great power in primaries.

So why isn’t he running for President, dammit? Rabscuttle, you and I may disagree on a lot, but I think we’d agree on DeMint’s efforts here. :)

“So why isn’t he running for President, dammit? “

Too soon to announce. He is helping to get conservatives in power now, and getting a higher profile. He may yet decide to run - it’s a little early yet- wait and see.
