At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.
The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.
The fact that it's still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party's own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.
"I looked at that and said, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, said last week. "Should it get taken out? Absolutely. Does anybody think we should be arresting homosexual people? If you take that stand, you really probably shouldn't be in the Republican Party."
Gay rights have been rapidly advancing nationwide since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy law in 2003's Lawrence v. Texas decision. Gay marriage is now allowed in five states and Washington, D.C., a federal court recently ruled the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy unconstitutional, and even a conservative tea party group in Montana ousted its president over an anti-gay exchange in Facebook.
But going against the grain is the Montana GOP statement, which falls under the "Crime" section of the GOP platform. It states: "We support the clear will of the people of Montana expressed by legislation to keep homosexual acts illegal."
Montana GOP executive director Bowen Greenwood said that has been the position of the party since the state Supreme Court struck down state laws criminalizing homosexuality in

I remember being a freshman in HS and getting shocked speechless by a teachers tirade on civil rights. He was white and called white women *itches. He was talking about inter-racial dating. This was 1964. His language was waaay beyond what he should have been saying. I can imagine what kids hear now.
This has been coming on for many, many years.
True, but what about incest—would you stay the hell out of that? The issue is far more complicated and the results of relationships is the most important issue in a state. Laws in the U.S. have got to protect the Natural Rights of everyone and having sex with anything and everything is not a natural right. It is unnatural.
If they do make homosexuality a crime, though, they would have to make fornication and adultery illegal, anything that prevents the natural rights of children to be raised by their biological parents.
Societies, become fascist, when they raise irresponsible children....and the only remedy to preventing crime and chaos is to have biological parents responsible for their biological offspring and to nurture and protect them to adulthood. The States have to protect and encourage that end result, unless they want extinction.
States are horrible at raising emotionally healthy children. Our prisons are filled with fatherless males.
The State does have the right to legislate against actions that cause death and disease and are a great cost in terms of medical costs and damage to relationships.
Homosexuality is sexist (excludes a sex which leads to second class citizenship wherever promoted like Sparta). It leads to a society that is divided, instead of united—marriage is the only thing that unites the sexes in the world and it is highly successful, unless it includes polygamy where the equality of the sexes is damaged. That system also creates 2nd class citizens or slaves. Look at islam.
It has been proven that the safest and most efficient form of government is one which elevates a one man, one woman relationship which is by far superior to any other social model. That is if societies want freedom and equality. You need responsible adults who can control their appetites, otherwise there is a need for government intervention.
To throw out reason, logic and science, is so bizarre and so selfish of homosexuals because they care about forcing societies to condone their “lust” at the expense of the physical and emotional development of young children. Really sick on more than one level.
The model that children see in their formative years is what determines their identity and actions. Homosexuality gives a model of extinction and nihilism and self-indulgence—it is NEVER inclusive of both sexes, which is so utterly sexist and exclusive! Marxism will result in a society that can’t unite.
The male/female model promotes sacrifice because of the natural differences of the sexes and it is the only way to foster the model where man learns to live with all people, not to the exclusion of men or women which denies them of their biological Natural Rights.
Any protection of the Natural Rights of the family....where a child has the right to be raised by their biological mother and father needs to be protected by our laws.
Every society that gives this special protection to homosexuals destroys and demeans the ideas that promote emotionally and physically healthy children for the future of society.
I think it is foolish to think a state does not have the right to discourage ideology which destroys the natural family—the building block of all healthy societies.
Courage is a great organization.
You want to outlaw homosexuality, so how would you word the legislation doing so? And how would you make sure that people aren't violating it?
I went home and told Grandma. She was shocked too. Mr Schmidt was there one year and he was gone. And there was never another tirade. Just that one.
If they aren’t pawing one another on a public street, they’d be obeying the law.
I'll wager 10 quatloos that Buggerman is gay.
The only thing that has changed is now they call them hoes.
I have a strong suspicion that the majority of people who are likely GOP voters would applaud the return of sodomy laws. Or at least allow the states to make their own laws regarding sodomy, which basically keeps homosexual acts private instead of being taught in schools and in the parks, rest areas, streets. etc.
Just as an illegal substance, keep it to yourself. If you get caught, you get in trouble. Plain and simple.
1. This is NOT - again, NOT - about what people do in private.
It is about public sodomy and promotion of sodomy.
2. The SCOTUS decision of TX vs Lawrence was nothing but Big Government interference in states’ rights. TX had a law making sodomy illegal. Two homosexuals (actually three) made a fake scene and called 911 trying to lure cops to witness the sodomy and then push the case to the SCOTUS. They had to try three times before it worked. Now the states have less power and the Fedgov has more.
That is not small gov, it is overweening Huge Government forcing the legitimacy of perversion on all the states whether they want it or not.
I can’t tell you how shocked I was. I was only 14 and as naive as they come.
I agree. Sort of the anti-NEA.
You're revealing yourself as a shill for the "gay" agenda. Many homosexuals are "conservative" like GOProud. IOW, "all gay, all the time".
Now they are teaching homosexual rights instead what I was subjected too. And I'll bet there are just as many shocked kids.
I hope we can do this again (seriously). Don't take it too hard. Back in 2000, I took a beating in a tax thread. At the time, I wanted to forget about this place. After time, this place showed me (logically) the error's of my thought process. Lots and lots of smart and passionate people here who will tell you things you don't (right now) want to hear. Give it time and be willing to look at it from other's perspectives as well..
Hope your weekend is well..
Mike
There is plenty of health data on homosexuals that prove the behavior is not something we should be offering up to children and society at large. Unless the goal is to shorten the life spans of people and make them mental and sick. This is the object of many elitists. Human life is like cockroaches to them.
Caught at what? Admitting it? Practicing it? Mentioning it? Tolerating it? If a neighbor calls the cops and says, "The people next door are growing pot in their basement" then the cops come, break down the door, and haul them away. If a neighbor calls the cops and says, "The couple next door are queers" then would you expect the same response?
Good find.
They are really trying the homophobe card on one hand, and “the GOP just luvs homos” on the other.
