Boehner: I'll Drop Tax Cut for Rich If I Have To [reality check at post 121]
CBSNEWS ^

(CBS) The leading Republican in the House, and a vocal proponent of allowing an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans, including the wealthiest 3% of earners, objected to charges by President Obama that Republicans are holding tax breaks for the bottom 97% of earners hostage unless the wealthiest also get an extension.

In a pre-taped interview to appear on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday, Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner said that, if approving a bill to extend breaks for middle class income Americans were "the only option," he would support it.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans would cost $700 billion over the next decade.

At a speech in Ohio earlier this week, Mr. Obama said, "With all the other budgetary pressures we have - with all the Republicans' talk about wanting to shrink the deficit - they would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 each to folks who are already millionaires."

I didn't like this position, but I believe this is a poker chip that the left has just lost.

This has taken the wind out of "it's all the Republican's fault" we keep getting from our whiny Princess President.

The game is just starting. Can the house and senate pass an extension quickly? I'm thinking that there's a lot of slippage between now and Nov that will keep it from passing.

GOP--LET THE CUTS EXPIRE AND LET PEOPLE GET JANUARY PAYCHECKS.

Then issue a retroactive extension. It will teach people a lot--particularly when Obama tries to stop it.

Tax cuts are meaningless without spending cuts.

I know it is cBS news, but this still angers me. The slant in this article gives the impression that the government is doling out money to rich folks (and therefore depriving the "needy"...blah blah). Tax cuts don't "cost" the government anything. They prevent the government from confiscating larger portions of taxpayer earnings. Tell this to a liberal, watch their brain melt and leak out of their ears.

Boehner did the right thing. Gingrich said the same thing on Fox this morning. They aren’t going to fall into the Dems. trap. They said they would support all tax cuts, but woyld like tax cuts for everyone including people making over $250 K. They said the Dems. control the legislation and if the only choice they had was to support tax cuts that don’t include those over $250K, they would. This my friends is “Smart” politics and keeps the Dems. from having an issue on taxes.

First of all, the cuts would have to be in place for ten years to cost $700 billion over “the next ten years”. Second, tax cuts adds revenue to the coffers.

If the repubs cave on this we’ll be worse off in January if they take charge. All that will happen is they’ll cave for the next two years on everything else then the muslim will be re-elected and the dems will take back congress.

So what is the income for ‘rich’ folks in America now? Anyone making over $100,000 a year??

Goodbye, small businesses that make up the backbone of the American economy! You all are too RICH to save us now!

“Share the wealth” and Obamazation of ALL industries, here we come!!

The political timing from the Democrats is shady. They’re offering a some but not all offer on tax cuts, so they can divide Republicans and conservatives before midterms and make the GOP look like Republicans doesn’t want to cut taxes.

Ideally, conservatives want everyone to get tax cuts, but Dems will use that to say conservatives / GOP are holding up the bill b/c the GOP doesn’t want tax cuts...for the middle class, knowing very well that many Republicans view tax cuts from Reagan’s “trickle down” economy.

Dems know this is their last chance to pull such a stunt before new members are sworn in come January.

"they would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 each to folks who are already millionaires."

Well, if this tax increase goes through, the ONLY jobs that will be created for the next decade will be government jobs.

If I had 1m dollars and had to pay the government $100,000 just for having it, I sure as hell "ain't" going to spend any more to create more wealth just to give THAT away to the government too.....I'm going to sit on my money until this tyrannical government gets out of my face before I go on with business.

Ever notice how no one in the Progressive Fascist Democrat political/media machine every question how the $13.4 trillion in new spending 0 and the Democrat Congress have given us is going to be paid for?

The fact that he’s even discussing anything “for the rich” means he’s on the wrong side of this discussion. We’re not marxists. We don’t play the “us vs. them” and “one side can’t gain unless the other side loses” games.

I love the way they phrase this. Either way it "costs". It is just a question of cost to whom.

well spotted

what is it with the GOP and some on the right when they play the lefts word game.
they say public option and we should saying Govt take over but we say what they want us to say.
here’s some others
gay but we should say homosexual
they say back to work bill we should be saying stimulus
tax cuts for the rich we should be saying tax cuts for everyone and for those which will make jobs

when we play the lefts word game then we play by their rules and they set the tone of the debate right away.

they’re not stupid when it comes to this but many on the right are.

We will “pay for it” by defunding as much of the $13.4 trillion in new spending Obama and the Democrat Congress created in the last 2 years as we need to.

WHY the heck is he allowing himself to be interrogated by a Dem Party hack??

WHY to Republicans continue to give credibility to these Democrats disguised as journalists?
