NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site off an offshore petroleum platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana.

Dumb question: why are the oil rigs exploding in the south? We have a lot of them here in CA offshore and none of them have gone boom.

Well, I don’t think it’s eco-terrorists. Those guys are publicity whores, so they would be sure that everybody knew who was responsible.
This looks to me like it might be a government effort to justify closing down all Gulf drilling indefinitely.
