No..rigs don’t just blow up. Over 40,000 rigs have been drilled in the gulf and the only two explosions have been in the last 3 months under Obama’s watch. If it isn’t eco nut sabotage, it is likely due to crazy restrictions that a bunch of no knowing Obama bureaucrats put in place. Mark my word..This is OBAMA’S FAULT!

I have an idea. How about we find out what caused this explosion before we start all the hare-brained speculating?

We're still waiting to find out what actually happened to the first rig. People assumed and left it at that.

TV news just reported that it is a production rig.

This is much different than the Deepwater situation.
Not a blow-out.

>>There was never an accident until Deepwater Horizon and now two explosions??!!<<

Oh, my Lord, are you serious?

Please tell me you’re not serious.

I’m starting to think you are really serious.

Oil wells experience blowouts all the time. Texas alone had (I think) 14 or 15 in 2009.

Mariner owns the lease. (Reporting that it owns the rig as well, but I’m not sure about that.)

From the link in post #127:

Vermillion 380 is a fixed, manned production platform. It's not a well being drilled for oil, like BP's Macondo well and it's not a floating rig like the Deepwater Horizon.

http://www.faqs.org/sec-filings/100301/MARINER-ENERGY-INC_10-K/

At year-end 2009 estimated proved reserves attributed to our Vermillion 380 field were 33.2 Bcfe, consisting of approximately 47% oil and NGLs and 53% natural gas. During 2008 and 2009, we drilled five wells and added additional production capacity on the “A” platform. Hurricane Ike damaged the structure with the rig on the platform, causing us to suspend drilling while underwater structural repairs were made. We brought the platform back on production at reduced rates until the facilities upgrade was finished. The platform is currently producing approximately 28 MMcfe per day. Our working interest in this block is 100%. Production at Vermillion 380 was approximately 1.1 Bcfe in 2009.

This isn’t even anywhere NEAR the scope of the Deepwater Horizon.

And yes, blowouts happen all the time.

Since I started working in oil and gas in 2006, I can think of at least three rig explosions before the Horizon. Y’all just didn’t hear about them because no one was hurt and the damage was contained quickly.

The Chron is wrong. Vermilion 380 is 319 feet deep.

Homeland Security saying the rig was not producing oil or gas.

Gads..Homeland Security is the ‘point’ on this explosion according to Fox News..get ready for more lies and incompetence brought to us by the Obama Administration. Perhaps Obama wanted a do-over..(eye roll)

Gulf Oil Rig Explodes Off La. Coast

Posted: 11:35 am EDT September 2, 2010
Updated: 11:56 am EDT September 2, 2010

GRAND ISLE, La. — An offshore oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive oil spill.

A commercial helicopter company reported the blast around 9:30 a.m. CDT Thursday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats were en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.

The Coast Guard said initial reports indicated all 13 crew members from the rig were in the water. One was injured, but there were no deaths.

The platform owned by Mariner Energy is in about 2,500 feet of water, the Coast Guard said, and was not currently producing.

About 206 million gallons of oil from an undersea well spilled into the Gulf after BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers.

No one is speculating anything.

Even Forest Gump would think this is strange, unusual and questionable upon first thought no matter what.
