The next Ronald Reagan? Sarah Palin follows in the Gipper's large footsteps
The Washington Times ^ | August 31, 2010 | James T. Hackett

Posted on 08/31/2010 4:04:41 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Ronald Reagan was an American original and a unique political phenomenon. He combined unusual charm and personality and showed common sense that connected with the average American. He was attacked viciously by the political elites, who saw his popular appeal - and his opposition to big government and high taxes - as a threat to their domination of the nation's politics.

Conservatives have been searching for a new Ronald Reagan, so far without success. But perhaps the Gipper's heir is in sight. Sarah Palin is remarkably similar to the late president. The Mama Grizzly from Alaska is certainly an American original, and her success in picking political winners against the odds has shown that she is no less a political phenomenon. And the policies she supports are similar - small government and low taxes, plus energy self-sufficiency and a balanced budget.

Just as Reagan was denigrated as an ex-movie actor with limited education, Mrs. Palin is portrayed as an ex-model with limited education, which means she did not go to Harvard or Yale, like most recent presidents and much of the liberal elite. The fact that elites from those institutions have nearly destroyed the economy and bankrupted the country does not reduce their arrogance or diminish their efforts to hold onto power.

Mrs. Palin was roundly criticized when she left the office of governor of Alaska, but since then, she has been riding a populist wave accompanied by Tea Party activists who want a return to common sense and responsible spending. President Obama promised change, which many sought after the budget excesses of the George W. Bush years and the pork-obsessed Republican Congress. But candidate Obama was unclear, telling each audience what it wanted to hear.(continued)

I guess I'm a "cultist" since I agree with most of what he says. I wrote reports and briefings for both President Carter and Reagan, and there couldn't be two more different men.

Let’s just hope she doesn’t decide to quit, again. The Gipper would never have done so.

I would see the main differences to be that (1) Reagan had a purpose when he ran for President, there were things he wanted to accomplsh; (2) he had appeal beyond the evangelical right; and (3) he had excellent and extensive experience as a chief executive.

"It could happen!"

Hey, we're living a reality that would have been rejected by fiction publishers as too far-fetched a decade ago.

At least we know some things about Palin, which is more than we can say about our Manchurian President.

And SHE has some executive experience.

Funny how you buy that liberal media spin.

You buy the other lies too?

I'm unsure what Hackett was trying to say here... a nice summary of all things Palin?

We all know she is an American Original.

We all know she is the only heir apparent to Reagan at moment.

We all know the Left fears her...

perhaps what is left out of this article (if one can call it that) is that the RIGHT fears her, too. The RINOS.

Ooo boy. Talk about pressure. Yet if Palin is truly, as we born agains say, truly “anointed” for this time, then this means God will give her all she needs in terms of wisdom, emotional energy and love to get through this.

She needs to remember David turned down all of Saul's super-special-professional-spiffy armor for the one-on-one with Goliath. Funny how God works with those He loves. Three little rocks and then the kingdom...

Seems to me that Sarah’s political career has been pretty darned purposeful so far.

Palin has nowhere near Reagan's grip on foreign policy, manufacturing, or history, nor has she demonstrated the inclination to learn. It worries me because it leaves her vulnerable to relying too heavily upon advisers, which is where the RINO statists live.

"President Obama promised change, which many sought after the budget excesses of the George W. Bush years and the pork-obsessed Republican Congress. But candidate Obama was unclear, telling each audience what it wanted to hear."

Not that fairness is a priority when discussing Bush or Palin, but there was a Democratic Congress the last 2 years of Bush's presidency.

Lots of similarities with Reagan, and even more differences. And not most, but some of those differences, favour Palin - relative youth (if elected in 2012), fighting spirit & political instinct IMO.

Important thing is both are the best electable conservatives we have ever had, and Palin like Reagan is likely to shift the the country very fundamentally to the centre right like Reagan, if elected.

Let's hope some people will get some understanding of her decision to resign. A little study wouldn't hurt.

Sarah certainly has “Reaganesque” qualities. She has been great at boiling things down with simple catch phrases - Death Panels and 9/11 Mosque. She has a very unique ability to energize and inspire people, both for and against her, which means she is an effective human being.

Reagan spent the Carter years writing, doing radio, and giving many policy speeches. People were surprised to see how substanitive he really was. He was in his late 60’s during this time. He was quite seasoned and experienced.

I believe Sarah is on the right trajectory. But in fairness to Reagan, she has a ways to go.

Which raises the question: should we really be looking for the “next Reagan”? Who says there will be another one? He was a special guy. We may never really find another like him.

But he should certainly be our model.

A very gutsy decision on her part, and very positive for conservatives. It is a plus not a negative.
