In the rain of Sunday morning they took to the streets of lower Manhattan, both sides of a mosque debate that will begin to slow down soon like a car running out of gas.
There were a thousand or so people there, some supporting the building of a mosque at Park Place and more opposing it, carrying signs about freedom and religion, speaking for God and about America at a place where just about every religion in the world lost someone on Sept. 11, 2001.
Somehow, even as this played out, the shouting back and forth near what they all call sacred ground, you had the sense the caravan is about to move on to something else, to something more relevant in the lives of those who live in all parts of the city.
Like perhaps J-O-B-S.
Some construction workers say they would not take on the job of rebuilding the old Burlington Coat Factory on principle. Good for them. Of course, others will move up in the line, because of something else sacred in New York: A regular paycheck.
Even before the demonstrations, so much of this debate had turned stupid, dumb and mean and loud, because all public debate eventually does these days.
Somehow we had gone past reasonable conversation about whether the building of this mosque is a practical - and sensitive - matter, and straight to train-wreck TV in Cable America.
This time it wasn't Sarah Palin leading the charge, the same yammering Palin who can dumb things down in ways that should be measured the way we measure fast times in the Olympics.
No, this time the gold medal went to Newt Gingrich, the front-runner in an awful lot of polls to be the Republican nominee for President in two years.
Gingrich showed up on a Fox morning show and talked about why the "radical Islamists" who want to build the cultural center and mosque two blocks from Ground Zero, who want to show they can "build a mosque next to a place where 3,000 Americans were killed by Islamists," must be stopped.
"Nazis don't have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust museum in Washington," Gingrich said.
He wasn't done yet, because the guy never seems to run out of saliva: "We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor."
So somehow Gingrich, who is obsessed with what he calls the "secular socialism" of Barack Obama, was now good and geeked up, high on religion and what he believes is his higher calling to lead the whole country.
Gingrich is a Catholic now, by the way, having decided that's not just the best way into heaven for him, but perhaps into the White House as well.
He still thinks he can be President someday, and continues to raise big money from people who agree with him, even though Knute Rockne will be President before he is.
Rudy Giuliani - tied with Gingrich at three marriages, the world record for anybody seeing himself as a serious contender for the White House - was a Republican front-runner once. You see how well that worked out for him once the country got to know him. It will work the same for Gingrich.
This is somebody who once pressed a wife - No. 1 - to finalize their divorce while she was in a hospital bed recovering from cancer surgery.
Later, Mrs. Gingrich No. 2, whom he was going around with for a while before he had gotten No. 1 to sign those pesky divorce papers, was shocked to find out Gingrich had been stepping out on her with the future No. 3.
Marianne Gingrich, No. 2, is interviewed by John Richardson for a new profile of Gingrich in Esquire magazine. Here is one of the things she says about her ex, who continues to believe, rather insanely, that he is some kind of moral authority.
"[Gingrich] believes that what he says in public and how he lives don't have to be connected," she tells Richardson. "If you believe that, then yeah, you can run for President."
When Richardson raises the subject with Gingrich, Newt says, "That's up to God and the American people."
Somehow he thinks he speaks for both, on mosques and everything else. The radical here isn't Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the man who wants to build the mosque. It's guys like Gingrich.
In the end, it's never the houses of worship that should scare you the most, it's the people in them.
for the UNknowing...
This is not a multicultural issue....its far greater
Here in this issue, we get to see the power of Sharia. Cash coming in from Iran, Saudiland etc etc even Pakistan.
When the founding fathers thought of America, their little baby, the last thing they wanted was an invasive force to stifle, smother it, and then overwhelm it and kill it.
Most people do not recognize that what happens in a mosque is sedition. Pure and simple. Islam is not just a religion, it is a cult. Larger than that though, it is a political system, it is its own government, a economic system (which includes funding new mosque construction), its judicial...all wrapped up in the word sharia. This is inclusive of its military (jihadis) all rolled into one with one intent ...and that is to rule wherever they take root. It is a invasive, systemic infection looking to take over the host once it has quantum.
This is not just a religion, but something that cloaks itself in those terms so it should not be given the same treatment contemplated under the first amendment. The Korans Sharia rules are to consume whatever government there is wherever it goes.
Islam is political, and its goal is to supplant and replace. Globally.
When the founding fathers thought of America, their little baby, the last thing they wanted was an invasive force to stifle, smother it, and then overwhelm it and kill it.
The sooner America learns this , the better.
Obama? Obama and Company? Should be tried for treason in this issue for promoting the establishment of a foreign government on our soils. He is doing nothing to protect America as per his oath. Also, as a Muslim, he knows this, he know far better, he knows sharia, but is looking to deceive America.

“Of course, others will move up in the line, because of something else sacred in New York: A regular paycheck.”
Whores in NYC. Who could have guessed?
What a snotty hit-job.
What a spiteful piece of work is that Lupica....dragging up all the old assassination bullets. Too bad ammo is only good for one shot.
Mike Lupica is a dishonest, brain dead hack. A paper that would give him a soapbox to scream from should be ashamed!
The radical isn’t the Imam? You’ve got to be kidding!
The only scary fanatics I see are the Islamic killing machine.
Scary fanatics like Newt Gingrich turn Ground Zero mosque debate into ugly, stupid spectacle

What a pant load. By the libtards at the New York Daily News. Makes me almost want to support Newt’s run for prez.
Almost.
A petite limo liberal!
I guess he’s following in the Olbermann mold.
From sports to drooling moonbat.
“Somehow, even as this played out, the shouting back and forth near what they all call sacred ground, you had the sense the caravan is about to move on to something else, to something more relevant in the lives of those who live in all parts of the city. “

The lib arguement is always - let’s move on.
Some of the biggest liberals in the newspaper business write for the sports section. Don't forget it.

Who is scarier? A radical Muslim dangling a severed head on Al Jazzera or a gray haired American politician?
Let me see if I understand this article. The mosque should be built because Newt Gingrich got divorced twice?
“What a snotty hit-job.”
What pissy little rant from Lupica isn’t? That’s all he’s capable of.
Mike Lupica Shares His Liberal Views. Usually when you read a sports column you expect to read about sports, but lately NY Daily News columnist Mike Lupica has been using his articles (esp. in his weekly "Shooting From The Lip" column) to give readers political insights from his obviously warped Left-leaning brain:

Mike Lupica: Shrill shouters betray post-9/11 promises to be best we can be (attacks Mark Levin)
And on this most recent anniversary of Sept. 11, the country seems as full of hate and noise as it has ever been. This is an America where Rep. Joe Wilson, whoever he is, thinks he can call the President of the United States a liar, Wilson talking to the President the way he would the help, or some waiter who was supposed to bring him another drink.
Wilson really did sound like somebody who had been on hold for an hour, waiting to scream about socialism to Rush.
But why wouldn't Wilson scream out the way he did? This is a time when a radio host like Mark Levin routinely refers to President Obama as "that jerk," all in the name of liberty, of course, and the fight against tyranny. Or maybe this all just comes out of a fury that there weren't enough screamers to keep the black guy from getting elected.
More “tolerant”, “compassionate” “journalism” from the Looney Left.
