Colorado Governor: Hickenlooper (D) 43%, Maes (R) 31%, Tancredo (ACP) 18%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | August 13, 2010 | Scott Rasmussen

Democratic candidate John Hickenlooper now holds a double-digit lead in the three-way race for governor of Colorado.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Colorado Voters finds Hickenlooper, the mayor of Denver, with 43% support. Businessman Dan Maes, the winner of Tuesday’s Republican Primary, captures 31% of the vote, while American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo trails with 18%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

This is the first poll conducted since Maes won the Republican primary.

It shows Maes with a bit more support than he had before the primary and Tancredo with a bit less support.

Hickenlooper’s level of support has been fairly steady for months, but he has clearly benefitted from Tancredo’s entry in the race which splits the Republican vote. The Democrat had run roughly even with Maes in two earlier surveys.

Maes wouldn’t win the head to head match anyway. Tancredo is just sending the RINOs a message, i.e., no more holding our noses and voting for the lesser of two evils.

Exactly. We have no chance of winning as long as these purer-than-thou “conservatives” who have no chance of winning split the vote and hand the election to the Dems.

Someone needs to talk some sense into Tancredo. He is giving the spot to the rats.

Tancredo is a completer fool and moronic idiot if he stays in.

The combined total for Maes and Tancredo is 49%, and I doubt that Tancredo's voters would be going for Hickenlooper. A united front would beat Hickenlooper.

He says that when he wins he will deal with Immigration within the first month. 31 percent is pretty good and it is still early.

But Tom's not the one with 31%. And it's later than you (and he) thinks.

If the Republicans were worth a crap, he wouldn’t have a reason to run.

Right so you stayed home in ‘08 rather than vote for McCain.

I get it.... you would rather have Obama....

so you would rather cut off your nose to spite your face...excellent choice....thanks for the HOPE AND CHANGE.(do I really need to say 'SARC'???)

Yes getting less than 20% is "sending a message", especially if the guy wasn't going to win the head to head anyway. Way to defeat your own argument. LOL

We have no chance of winning as long as these purer-than-thou “conservatives”

Which brings up the obvious question: If you are doing something which is actively opposed to conservatism (such as splitting the vote with a conservative Republican so as to help elect a liberal Democrat), then can you really be considered a "conservative" anymore?

After all, "by their fruits ye shall know them." If you claim to be a conservative, but help shoot down a conservative (Maes is the Tea Party candidate...guess even the Tea Parties are not good enough for some of the purer-than-thous now...) candidate's campaign and elect a liberal Democrat instead, then you and your supporters cannot be considered conservatives.

Too early to tell. Tancredo also supports legalization of marijuana and homosexual marriage. Most die hard Republicans will not support him in the end but there are enough libertarian leaning voters to spoil the show.

Maes is not out of trouble yet, either. More keeps coming out on his finances and his past statements that lean left are coming back to haunt him. Maes says he’s still learning but his “instincts” are not as solid as conservative voters would like.

The 43% the dem is polling is a fairly consistent number, and is exactly the percentage of votes Clinton received in the 1992 Presidential election. When you combine the votes of the far left, government employees, unions, feminists, those who won't be personally affected by dem tax raises, and minorities, you have a solid ~40%. Republicans can't afford to split the remaining votes.

There's a better plan. Fight the good fight in the primary, and then support the winner of the primary.

This won't be a popular position with some, but my opinion is that first we need to remove all Democrats, and then we can work on the RINO’s.

When the choice is limited to one or the other.

We stand a better chance of forcing RINO officials to bend to our conservative wishes than we will a Democrat.

Does Colorado have a run-off rule? (i.e. if no one gets a majority of the vote, then there is a run-off between the top two candidates) If not, then the Republicans are screwed.

The Tancredo-ite immigration position has yet to demonstrate that it can win an election - any election, anywhere.

So how did Tancredo manage to get elected and reelected for a total of 5 terms. Do you even have an idea as to what Tancredo's position is? Have you ever heard of the immigration caucus in Congress headed by Bilbray? Steve King is a stalwart on immigration along with Chaffetz of Utah. Bennett lost in Utah in the primary to Lee who is strong on immigration.

Tancredo deserves full credit for bringing immigration to the fore. Take a look at the public's support for AZ or the Dems and Rinos who are now backtracking on immigration issues. McCain had the chutzpah to say he never supported amnesty in his latest campaign. Congress just passed another border security bill similar to what they did in 2006 with the Secure Fence Act dusring the runup to the midterms. The are a large number of bills at the state level cracking down on illegal immigration. Poll after poll shows the public on the side of Tancredo when it comes to immigration issues.

And before you call me names - prove me wrong and win an election.

Toughness on immigration did not cost candidates their election
