Senate passes bill to save teacher, police jobs –

WASHINGTON (AP) — Legislation to provide billions to save the jobs of teachers and other public workers is on track to pass the Senate, helped along by the votes of a couple of GOP moderates. Democrats cracked a GOP filibuster on Wednesday, and the House was being called back from its summer break for an expected final vote next week to help cash-strapped states and school districts. The $26 billion measure would help states ease their severe budget problems and, advocates said, stop the layoffs of perhaps 300,000 teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public employees. Though scaled back, the bill also would salvage a victory for Democrats who have been unable to deliver most of the jobs help they and President Barack Obama promised.

The legislation advanced by a 61-38 tally that all but ensured it would pass the Senate on Thursday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would call the House back into session next week to approve the measure to get it to Obama for his signature before most schools reopen. Many Republicans objected to the expense at a time of record budget deficits, but moderate Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine cast the key votes to break the filibuster — as they did last month in helping Democrats pass a six-month extension of jobless benefits.

Teachers unions get a cash bomb just in time for the elections. GOP useful idiots can always be counted on to help.

Pray for America

Snowe comes up for Republican primary in 2012, Collins in 2014. A primary defeat for Snowe in 2012 would send a strong message. I would rather see a Dem win that seat in 2012 than Snowe.

“Why can’t teachers be canned like anyone else? There is nothing terribly special about a teacher. Fire them!”

I agree. Better yet, fire the usually ridiculously overpaid schools district administrators. I have a friend who’s wife is an apparatchik with a local school district. His two kids now each have an iPad courtesy of her hiring a $15K “speaker” to help motivate the district teachers.

Isn’t a paycheck in a rotten economy “motivation” enough??? The apparatchik is already paid a salary of over 100K per year. She was told by the district lawyer-— “don’t accept the iPads because it is like a bribe”. A different district “official” said “oh... its ok because the gift is below 10K”

Believe me, this type of $hit is VERY common in school districts. It makes me puke.

Any Maine freepers out there? Can you tell me why you keep sending these two “libs-in-republican-clothing” back to the Senate?

They represent Maine. Maine is the problem.

don’t go there. Don’t eat Maine Lobsters. Don’t do any thing that supports Maine. Maine is the enemy of good Americans as all the other loyalist states of north east England.

The Americans have gone leaving mostly loyalists behind

Actually we may need more cops if unemployment keeps going up thus crime will follow. Otherwise each town will need to form a militia.

No surprise here. Change agents (teachers) and law enforcement can be used to further ideology. Why, in my state 2010=11 ushers in day long kindergarten! I protest! No doubt this is a Federal edict! Innocent babies are too young for a full day of indoctrination! No doubt the curriculum would include subjects no five year old ears should hear!
