The Constitutional Amendment Con
American Spectator ^ | 09 aug 2010 | W. James Antle, III

Last Friday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) let the cat out of the bag: his sudden crusade to reform birthright citizenship is directly related to his need for political cover on amnesty for illegal immigrants.

"Yeah, I think it's fair to say that I need to go home to South Carolina and say: listen, I know we're all upset that we have 12-14 million people illegally, " Graham told National Review's Daniel Foster. "I'm going to have to be practical. We're not going to deport or jail 12-14 million people." Graham's practical solution is the same old "comprehensive immigration reform," the logic of which is that it would not be amnesty for grand theft auto if the perpetrator got to keep the car in exchange for paying a fine and promising to read the owner's manual.

Of course, Graham already gave away the game when he entertained a constitutional amendment to clarify what the 14th Amendment says about birthright citizenship. The New Republic's Jonathan Chait recently snickered at the number of conservative constitutional amendments floating around that have been endorsed by "mainstream Republicans," but the joke is really on conservatives: a no-hope constitutional amendment is the usual way a GOP politician pays lip service to some conservative concern he plans to do nothing about.

A classic example is the antiabortion human life amendment. At its peak in 1984, it got 49 votes in a Republican-controlled Senate with a sympathetic, articulate pro-lifer in the White House -- 18 votes short of passage, two shy of a simple majority. Fast forward more than twenty years to the federal marriage amendment. With a 10-seat Republican majority in the Senate and a sympathetic if inarticulate president, the gay marriage amendment failed 49 to 48.

Graham's game is this: we'll amend the Constitution to clarify birthright citizenship in exchange for amnesty.

It's a bad deal, obviously. No Constitutional amendment is needed, only a statute, and one is still current in this Congress, a bill authored by Nathan Deal, similar to one proposed in 2001 by Bob Stump.

All that needs to be done is pass this bill in the Congress, which of course won't happen while the Democrats have control.

So if you're a Republican with a brain, unlike Graham, you see a winning issue: elect us and we will pass this law, no Constitutional amendment needed - which would take years anyway (although it should be an amendment, but hey...I'm a realist).

Be interesting to see if Boehner really gets that. He's got a major wedge issue which could leave Lindsey Darling in the dust. Does Ohio Johnny have the same courage as Jan Brewer?

The vast majority will leave on their own once firm examples are made...

This was demonstrated in 1954 with Operation Wetback.

General Swing deported about 500,000...and something like another 2 million then self deported.

Same effect in Arizona in the last 2 months. Just the threat of enforcement made a major impact.

I don’t buy the 14th amendment “look into” scam.

This is identical to the Federal Marriage Amendment. When it was comming to a head, the idiots at the GOP pushed the flag burning amendment as a distraction for the sheep and useful idiots.

DO NOT TRUST RINOS

"We're not going to deport or jail 12-14 million people"

Why not? It would be cheaper than the costs of providing all the freebies that taxpayers are forced to fund now, and the bullshit "Anchor Baby" rule has caused this to happen, along with those freebies.

How about a $1000 per illegal found by American Citizens and reported+depored? The savings would be billions.

“I’m going to have to be practical. We’re not going to deport or jail 12-14 million people.”

I am sick of this false argument. There is no need to deport 12-14 million. It is necessary to make the first ones STICK. The rest will deport themselves.

But then, of course, the elite who rule us have no concept of how to deal with real world problems. Like a balanced budget. Like how to meet our emergy needs. Like how to tackle the million and one problems that normal people would be able to solve in a month!

"when it comes to Congress agreeing to do ANYTHING about immigration"

FOLLOW THE MONEY!

So long as donations to campaigns keep pouring in from businesses that DEPEND on cheap illegal labor, there will be NO action to stop it. Paying low wages, and then having the taxpayers funding the medical care, child care, food, housing, education, etc. is what attracts illegals into this country. The second major attractant is the bullshit erroneous Activist interpretation that a foreigner's baby born on U.S. soil is SOMEHOW an automatic U.S. Citizen....it doesn't even pass the smell test.

Using the code word "comprehensive" with immigration reform means AMNESTY for all the illegal squatters who are here, to get 20 million Democrat votes for even MORE handouts.

.

Help Texas watch her borders.
Watch live on 14 cameras and report illegal alien invaders.
Night cams in operation

http://www.blueservo.net/index.php?error=nlg

Does it work? Yes.
Recently caught on cam and reported:
String of illegals running through brush with backpacks
Numerous sightings of boats crossing the river
Numerous vehicles late at night in isolated areas
IMMENSELY satisfying

Lindsay lies like the pig he is.

Of course they can all be deported and they should. There is no reason why they can’t.

Don’t buy this lie.

Impose the death penalty for illegals and they will vanish quickly.

The author has this nailed. I am suspect of every RINO talking about a constitutional amendment. That appears to be a tactic to make sure the issue dies while pretending to take a tough stand. They did the same scam on a marriage amendment as the article points out, leading to the recent federal decision over CA marriage.

RINO Graham-nesty needs to go.

Slowly the number grows. They’ve quoted a figure of ten million for the last decade. Now they’re saying it’s 12-14 million. Yeah Lindsey, we’ve only had 2 to 4 million come over in the last decade, when we had ten million come over the decade before.

The pricks know damn well it’s 20 to 35 million, but they lie constantly on the matter.

WHo are his voters anyway? How does a state elect him and Jim DeMint at the same time?

” If the American press would read the actual history of Eisenhower’s effort (the last successful one) it would bury the “you can’t deport millions of people” false claim. “

The press, the Dems and Republican traitors like Graham and McCain all know the truth , and they will merely continue their lies and deception until we stop them.

It appears that at least half of our party in the House & Senate have gone from indifference to their constituencies to outright contempt for them. McConnell and Boner are asleep at the wheel, while the Obama administration is going 100MPH. This is the ugliest situation I have seen in my 56 years, and the outlook is mighty grim.

As I understand it, Lindsey was a lot more like DeMint when he first entered politics. As close as he is to McCain these days, I chalk at least part of it up to John turning another political figure to his way of thinking.

Once a political figure is elected, it’s darn near impossible to root them out from their own party. The Republican party would have none of it, and the grass roots is a hard way to dump a guy with little organized funding. McCain is a good example. He’s a real Mo Fo, and yet, he gets re-elected every six years.

You can see the dynamics at play right now.

I hope someone can replace Graham in 2014. I believe that’s when he’s up again.

Of course they know. They have such contempt for our intelligence, they think that they can get away with this lie. But 70% of Americans can add, and are aware that the 12 million figure is 10 years old.

Well I don't care if democrats keep nominating super liberals like Pelosi but I have serious problems with Republicans losing two elections in democrat landslides yet bring out the same old trash each election. Graham-nesty is a perfect example of why we need what I been preaching for years (read George Will's book back in 1993 titled Restoration), congressional term limits. We definitely need other limits on congress and president's power too. These Senators are arrogant after a few years.

What bothers me more than just about anything else, is that we have a major bastard in Arizona that we all know is a Leftist prick sellout. Can we clean up that mess? Not without having to overcome the endorsement of everyone’s favorite harlot.

Seriously folks, we’re the gang that couldn’t shoot straight. Even when it’s clear as a bell that a guy should be removed, and we have an excellent person to replace them, our party elite wanna-bes can’t even pull their heads out long enough to help.

So yeah, there’s a lot of things we should be doing, like getting our immigration situation under control, but those who lead us in this party are dead set on chaos, disruption, and down right subterfuge.

If ever there was a tar and feather moment called for, this is one of them.
