The Chevrolet Volt, the first mass-market electric vehicle from General Motors Co., will have a sticker price starting at $41,000 when it hits showrooms later this year.
But government tax credits and rebates designed to speed the entry of electric vehicles into the marketplace will make the price more attractive. There's a federal tax credit of $7,500 for electric vehicles. That lowers the Volt price to $33,500. An earlier report factored in an additional $5,000 credit for Californians, which would have brought the price to $28,500, but GM said the Volt will not be included in the state's special rebate program.
The sticker price of the hybrid Toyota Prius, the current favorite of gasoline misers and eco-drivers, ranges from $22,150 to $28,820, depending on the trim level and equipment.

Because they use “rare earth” minerals, which aren’t really that rare after all. But, when they were discovered, they were hard to get to, so they were called “rare earth”.
Most of the special “metals” used in these batteries come from China. Now how dumb can we be???
“English Translation: We are all buying electric cars. Most of us are being forced to buy them for other people to drive.”
Yes, the never ending stimulus.
I’ve taken a job requiring a big commute and really need to get rid of my old car.
I’m pleasantly surprised at how little the Prius costs after a couple years, and the gas mileage is great.
Haven’t test driven one, so I am not sure if I would like it...heard they can be annoying when the transmission shifts.
No silly - you just mount the optional windmill on the roof, which will turn a generator, which will charge the battery that will power the motor. Congress will repeal the law of conservation of energy to make all this possible.
here’s a fun comment from the link:

Where are the tax breaks for ALL THE POOR PEOPLE who have been riding bikes and mass transportation for years? Regardless of intent these people leave a smaller carbon footprint than their richer, car driving counter-parts every day. These incentives are for rich(er) people. Complete bias based on wealth.
For you fake green people talking about how another car is going to help save the planet time to wake up. You can not have your cake and eat it too. The real change that you are all too comfortable to make is ...
a. Sell your car and never buy another.
b. Move close to work.
c. Buy a bike and learn to live your life differently.
d. Use mass transportation.
If you do not do the four points above then please don’t brag about your “contribution”.
Btw ... 411 ... our planet is going to be just fine. The same way our planet was doing just fine when it was so young it couldn’t support life. Our planet is not going anywhere. Stop your silly worrying. We deserve to go extinct if we can not take care of our world
Government Motors? Not thanks, I’ll stick with my Mitsubishi Lancer that’s been getting ~35mpg.
Of course, this aired during GW's term.
What a shock—the value of all the government rebates goes to the GM owners, er, make that unions!
“We don’t have enough coal now to run our power plants.”
Yes, we do. We have over 100 years worth of coal.
basically about the same as a Prius mpg.
“Just imagine what kind of resto you could do to an old classic car with $41k. You could put every conceivable luxury add-on in it.”
Or I could bolt on a twin-turbo setup with all the supporting mods on my 2008 Shelby GT500 and have a 1000hp ZR-1 killer.
4 hours at 220V. Wouldnt that be like 4 hours with the dryer on high? or your water heater?
As compared to a some gas cars that can go that far on $2.79 worth of unleaded?
I just bought a 2011 Sonata that averaged 38.5 and 39.1 on my first two 200 mile round trip to visit relatives and I go over high elevations both to and from Palm Springs to Orange county CA. Sonata runs $22,000 Plus depending on options. Sonata is built by non union American workers in Tennessee. I didn’t even consider GM when looking.
That guy screams “gay dim”.
LLS
Nice looking couple, aren’t they?
I’ll bet that they aren’t supporters of Stroker, either.
Seventy-five hundred dollar direct subsidy for GM and its unions. It’s so easy to spend tax payer money.
