There was a History Channel show that lamented the nickel mines of Siberia. Horrid conditions, without a doubt. But the gist of it was, they wouldn't have be working in such deplorable conditions if it weren't for the American need for the product.

Of course, this aired during GW's term.

I remember that show. The soil is so polluted from the smelter emissions it is economicial to mine nickel from that soil.
