DETROIT — The Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in car capable of driving about 40 miles at a time on battery power without using any gasoline, will have a sticker price of $41,000 before a $7,500 federal tax credit, General Motors said Tuesday.
G.M. will also lease the Volt for $350 a month in the hopes of attracting consumers who want lower monthly payments or would hesitate to buy the vehicle until they are more comfortable with its technology.
The carmaker has begun taking orders for the Volt, using the Web site to direct consumers to a participating dealer. Dealers in selected states, including California, New York and Michigan, are scheduled to begin receiving the vehicle in November.
G.M. had kept the Volt’s price a secret since introducing the model as a concept more than three years ago, though executives had hinted that it would cost about $40,000. The price is considerably more than the Nissan Leaf, a pure electric car that goes on sale for $32,780 in December, but G.M. insists the Volt is a better value.
“You can drive it cross country, and our competition can’t do that,” Joel Ewanick, G.M.’s vice president for United States marketing, said. Nissan’s Leaf is expected to have a range of about 100 miles on a battery charge. The Volt has a small gasoline engine — which will require premium fuel, G.M. said Tuesday — that will give the car a total range of about 340 miles and allow drivers to fill up at a gas station if they cannot immediately charge the battery.
Both G.M. and Nissan are counting on the government’s $7,500 tax credit for plug-in cars to go a long way toward making their vehicles more affordable.

I think that the way it will work is Obama will put big time tax penalties on practical gas powered vehicles so that it becomes much more expensive to buy one.
As a near-life long GM fan, I used to look past the difficulties built into every GM vehicle. From restrictions around the simpliest things like changing spark plugs to interchanging metric to standard bolt sizes within the same part(!), in 2005 I finally admitted that GM built stupidity into their engine bays and threw in the towel. That year I bought the wife a Dodge (Hemi) Magnum and myself a Dodge (Cummins) Ram. Haven’t looked back!
I’m not at all surprised that you found a simple clutch replacement to be one of the hardest jobs you’ve ever done - it was on a GM product!

I pay less than $350/month for a Toyota Corolla and that’s not a lease. 34 mpg on back roads. $26 fill up every 2 weeks.

And how exactly is something running on electric all the sudden more evironmentally sound? Electricity comes from somewhere and it ain’t from rainbows and lollipops.
I don’t want to see the poor fool’s electric bill that buys one of these turds.
And what happens if you run out of juice? Are the gas stations going to allow these people to plug in their crappy cars? Doubt it.
I just bought my wife a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer with 28,000 miles on it for $17,200. It has 2 and 4 wheel drive, a straight 6 engine with 290 h.p. Every option except heated leather interior.
Ok, so it only gets around 20 mpg, but lemme see, $40,000 for a Volt minus $17,200 for the Trailblazer equals $22,800 difference. She currently spends about $40 a week on gas (at today’s prices), or $2,080 a year. the $22,800 savings would buy gas for over 10 years. Even if the price of gas doubles and the savings only bought 5 years of gas, it’s a no-brainer.

Well, it might be advisable if you are say, the head of a UAW local, or had some other political reason to buy one. It might be advisable if you happen to be a feckless liberal in charge of fleet vehicles at the government agency you work for. Other than that, the top 5 reasons why I wouldn't buy a Volt are
1. No money for luxuries like a new car.
2. I detest GM at this point, even though I was a GM enthusiast for most of my life.
3. "Government subsidized" is another way of saying "This product sucks or is too expensive. Please buy one anyway".
4. It's completely boring
5. The UAW has something to do with it.
