I’m really glad the Yankees won it all last year. It is only fitting that Steinbrenner went out on top.

Being a good Dodger fan, I despise the Yankees and the smugness and arrogance of Yankee fans. However, Mr. Steinbrenner has been personally and quietly generous to a number of the old-timers who played before generous pension funds. He took care of some of baseball’s great and very-goods who were down on their luck (both financial and health-wise) with stipends and sinecures.

He also loved the game; he could laugh at himself. May he rest in peace.

I never liked him much over the years, but as time has passed I've learned more about the things he's done behind the scenes that never got any public attention at the time.

From what I've heard, he has long had a standing policy of never letting a former Yankee suffer in financial distress after his career ended. One story in particular was pretty amazing. I may be wrong about this, but I think it involved Sal Maglie, who played only parts of a couple of seasons for the Yankees but was a well-known player in New York City for the Dodgers and Giants back in the 1950s. The story I heard was that Maglie was very sick and bedridden late in his life (he died in the 1990s), and Steinbrenner "hired" him to serve as some kind of scout for the team just to help him pay his medical bills.

The number of former Yankees now working in the organization -- including former Yankees who publicly feuded with Steinbrenner and didn't leave the team on good terms (Graig Nettles and Reggie Jackson come to mind) -- is a pretty good indication of Steinbrenner's generosity and decency.

He certainly made an impact on the game. Especially with the local tv rights deals that have made the Yankees what they are today.
