Habitat protection for the endangered arroyo toad, which lives along slow-moving pools and sandy streams in Southern California, would cost $789 million over 25 years, according to a new analysis by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Most of the costs are expected to occur in new development, primarily in San Diego County, the study shows. The analysis also considered losses from grazing, mining, road construction and utility projects, and possible prices increases for water customers.
The financial study was required as part of the agency's proposed designation of 112,765 acres as critical habitat for the small, buff-colored toad with dark-spotted, warty skin.

First off, just to mention a silly thing, why new development when people aren’t buying houses as it is?
Maybe some things just aren’t worth saving?
Toads are cool. Not that cool.
Patriotic Americans should go out there and kill the toads.
"send the little slimers to da big lillie pod in da sky"
Remember, extinct is forever. That would include the 99% of species that extincted before man ever set his dirty, little feet upon the planet.
Amen to that. Post a bounty of $100 a toad, and you’re still going to make a huge profit.
The protection of minor subspecies that may not in fact be unique has no merit. The reason it is failing is because it is not able to adapt to present the present change.
Change is caused by progressives who actually abhor progress and insist in reverting to a past long gone.
the toad must be allowed to disappear. There is no point al all in the effort to preserve a trivial population
>> Patriotic Americans should go out there and kill the toads.
That’s only attacking the *symptom*.
Hanging enviromentalists — now THAT would be attacking the PROBLEM!
LIBs are truly insane!
That money could be used to make mosquitoes extinct.
Some animals just need extincting.
Are these the same scientists who run the Global Scamming fraud? Why should we believe them on this? Who says this frog couldn’t adapt like every other frog?
Pray for America
“Center biologist Ileene Anderson said Thursday she is unhappy that the designation includes only areas where the toad already lives. “
I firmly suggest Ms. Anderson stick one (or more) up her a$$ and introduce them to a completely new “area”
I didn’t feel like reading the rest of the article, but...for just 2 or 3 million couldn’t they just built a big terrarium for the arroyo toads to survive in?
And 99% of those were extinct before our dirty feet hit the planet.
New development for toads, not humans.
If this continues, in 25 years the toads will still be here but the Fed won't...
Anaxyrus californicus - Justification:
Listed as Endangered because of a serious population decline, estimated to be more than 50% over the last ten years, inferred from observed reduction in the extent and quality of its habitat, in the number of locations and number of mature individuals, and in the area of occupancy.
