Law would apply to sales of cats, dogs, hamsters, rats, birds
It could soon be illegal for pet stores in San Francisco to sell pets.
The San Francisco Animal Control and Welfare Commission will take up a proposal tonight that would ban the sale of all small animals from the City's pet shops. Only fish would be allowed to be sold under the ordinance, which is believed to be the first of it's kind in the country.
The proposed law is designed to encourage people to rescue animals from the shelter instead of buying from a pet store. Supporters say it would reduce overcrowding and euthanasia rates.
Animal shelters say they are overrun with perfectly adoptable dogs, cats, hamsters and rabbits. The law would also crack down on puppy mills, which sometimes supply pet stores.
"If puppy mills don't have a place to sell their puppies, then they wont be in business," Sally Stephens, with the San Francisco Animal Control Welfare Commission said.
But there is some concern that the animal sale ban would be bad for businesses. A small bird store owner told us the measure would put him out of business, even though shelters are not overrun with birds.
two answers:
"did I ask for your opinion?"
"when I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you"
C'mon now, you know that the lavender mafia is anti-breeder.
No, it goes back to the irresponsible people who put the dog in the shelter in the first place.
It is far too late for San Francisco and possibly too late for California. My only recommendation to people living there is to move while you have a chance.

I'm not too keen on brick and mortar pet stores myself. Nor am I a fan of government regulators but these animals do need advocates with teeth.
I recently found a beautiful Siamese mix kitten up in a tree at my parents rural home.
About 10 weeks old, dehydrated, a little malnourished and full of fleas.
He was very affectionate, ate like a pig and knew how to use a litter box.
Unfortunately my parents couldn't take him in because of their health problems and they already have a big fat Manx kitty. I couldn't because my job requires extended travel.
It was a tough ride to the animal shelter after keeping him with me for only three days. I do hope he was adopted.
In case it matters to you, my reply was what his response should have been to the sanctimonious people giving him crap about about buying from a pet store.
But instead of trying to read a post correctly, you'd rather be an
Great, let’s put more companies out of business.
Yours was not.
Try to make your sentences longer, or clearer.
Or both.
So are they just going to nod and wink at the deplorable conditions in the fish mills?
These fish are held in tanks in incredibly damp environments!
Does no one see the tears of the koi?
Part of the distaste comes from these pets being seen as just another commodity to be bought on a whim when wandering by some storefront.
Then, when the owner tires of them they're tossed out like garbage.
If the animal is lucky, they go to a bare bones taxpayer funded shelter where good willed people may seek to adopt them. Given what they've been through they're not always ideal pets.
But I'm certainly not vilifying responsible pet owners who do use these stores.
If gerbiles are outlawed, only outlaws will have gerbiles!
Does this ban include gerbils? I think a big voting block in SF will not be happy about this!
Wrong. Black markets thrive when products are outlawed.
Public gay sex on the street corner.

Yep think that's about it.
I have no doubt that in San FranSicko, there will be an exception to the law for gerbils.

Lemmiwinks is relieved!

What about all the illegal pets immigrating across the California/Mexico border? What becomes of them? Shouldn’t they be given amnesty?
Remember, illegal pet immigrants are only doing the poopy jobs American pets won’t do.
