Rangel wants draft back to punish rich kids
New York Post ^ | July 8, 2010

Rep. Charles Rangel yesterday again called for bringing back the national draft -- right at the Times Square recruiting station. For the third time since the Iraq War began, the Harlem Democrat announced his plans to introduce a bill requiring all Americans to serve in the armed forces. "If you love your country, be prepared to serve," said Rangel, a Korean War veteran. Congress should stop funding the war and, instead, use tax dollars to bring troops home, he said. Rangel, who this year was stripped of his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee, said the bill calls for men and women 18-42 to sign up for the draft during wartime. It will likely be introduced next week.

Don’t worry, by next week the MSM will have turned it into the Republicans calling for the draft. They’re getting their “issues” lined up in preparation for the mid-term election. Gas prices will start falling at the end of the summer. Democrats in contested states will have properly distanced themselves from Obama and Obamacare. The media is being properly silent about the news blackout from the Gulf.

Sorry to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it’s all part of “the plan”.

“It might just end up filling the military with a bunch of people beyond pi$$ed at the Democrats.”

Oh, I don’t know. Within 4 years, the NEA and MSM would have convinced most people that GW Bush had reinstated the draft. Revisionist history is a leftist/marxist specialty. For example, look at who gets credit for the Civil Rights Act vs who actually voted for and agaisnt it.

Let’s do something that’s not needed, just to do something.

Democrats want to make the military a social engineering experiment. The see it as a huge job training service or a place to house criminals and the sick, lame and lazy.

Did I sleep through the sixties, lets see, active duty 1968 through 1971. A few good friends of mine have their names on that wall in Washington DC, they were drafted, I was not. Do you want to piss on all of them. One neighbor kid was a draftee tunnel rat, one of my cousins served two tour in country, he was a draftee, if you had said what you did to either of them It would not have been a pretty picture.

They believed that when your country called you were to step forward with honor and serve your country.

If you want to attack Rangle do so, but you don't need to be calling men of honor slaves.

These days few people really trust the MSM. It’s like Pravda only more hypocritical.

Rangel, Conyers, et. al. have been wanting this for years.
Life in their reconstructed Neo-70’s just isn’t complete without some good draft riots!

And because it is volunteer, it is made up of the FINEST in our society.

There are dodgie elements, as with any group of people. I've seen people that volunteered to join and get to Basic and become RTTs (Refuse-to-train.) They get cycled back through basic again, killing unit morale until they finally break the rules enough to get kicked out. It's stupid, but it happens. And with the PC police firmly ensconced in Basic now, you can't even assign them to KP and latrine details anymore. That being said, when I went through we had 5 of these out of a company of 83. Still, 5 too many.

Your friends and you were the exception, not the rule. Viet Nam era draftees generally did not want to be there. You’re looking for a fight for no reason.

(and YES, I did serve. Disabled vet here)

No not looking for a fight, but I was of the generation of men called baby killers, I will not tolerate anyone with an honorable discharge being called a damn slave.

Rangel constantly brings up the draft issue.

His ugly rhetoric is that only poor people join the military and he wants rich kids to be drafted.

This bull has been going on for years.

I don’t think this is such a bad idea, most countries in the world that I have worked with require some sort of military or civilian service.

Ever wonder why they want to work with American troops for training? A nickel says you were there providing some sort of training to these militaries....... How come their militaries full of conscripts couldn't develop to the same level as the US military?

I'v e been in the Marine Corps since well before 9/11; I assure there are enough problems with those that come in voluntarily and later 'change their mind' we don't need to draft them.

it will be an incentive for the top brass to re-think their political ROE agenda games, because it will also put their kids at risk.

Those decisions came from someone HIGHER than a guy in a pickel suit with stars on his collar. And, I highly doubt SecDef, POTUS, VPOTUS etc will have children affected by BS ROEs.

The person posting was expressing an opinion about the way liberals view the military not insulting those who serve. Viet Nam vets definitely got a bum rap for honorable service.

My father, a life long Democrat and who I respected, told me back during Viet Nam that if my country called me to serve and I refused (not that it was a question) that I shouldn’t bother coming home. That was a war escalated by Democrats. However, when Bush was president and we went into Iraq, he sang a different tune. That never made sense to me ...

so the age of Rangles draft is 18-42. The selective service is 18-25. Isnt 42 a little on the older side to be drafted?

Liberalism is about punishment, control and keeping people down, not freedom. Rangel in order to punish the rich kids, he also punishes the poor kids as well. They also don’t want you to enjoy yourself !

Just about all the leftists I encountered over the years are closet authoritarians or tyrants. Those types in positions of authority were either school teachers or bosses at work. The liberal school teachers didn’t understand the concept of vacation such as giving a major project on the Friday before break due on the Monday immediately afterward. In the workplace such as the manager I worked for, permission had to be asked before embarking on any work that needed to be done. When I took vacation, I had to get permission to take the time off and had to get permission to leave town and I had to give a schedule on where I was at for the whole time, and means to be reached such as phone numbers, e-mail addresses.

> Lefties cannot understand or stand the concept of individual freedom.

That is so insulting to the men and women who volunteer and put their lives on the line for jerks like Rangel.

We have the best and brightest military - because it is comprised of volunteers. To question their motives is despicable.

I have, however, supported the draft on the basis of fairness and also for the discipline that provided generations of young boys with direction and the tools to become responsible men.

They are all tyrant wannabes, because they think they will be the ones wielding the whip instead of under its lash.

However, if the LIQ (lib in question) happens to be someone that would like to remain your acquaintance, say, as a relative, they get really uncomfortable when you get them pinned down, like this:

Me: do you really think that “public service” for youth should be mandated by the government.
LIQ: Yeah, sure, that’d be a great idea.
Me: So you think it would be OK for the government to require youth service?
LIQ: Yes, I do.
Me: And would you be willing to authorize the government to kill me if I didn’t allow them to force my kids into such a program?
LIQ: Oh, now you’re just being extreme.

See, libs usually get really uncomfortable when you clarify the implementation or results of those policies that they support to make themselves feel like they’re on the side of the angels.
