Some GOP stalwarts plan to vote for (Democrat) Bill White (for Texas Governor)
Houston Chronicle ^ | June 18, 2010, 12:01AM | JOE HOLLEY

Posted on 06/18/2010 1:40:31 PM PDT by a fool in paradise

...When his candidate for governor, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, fell to Gov. Rick Perry, he switched his support to Democrat Bill White.

Madden is one of a number of former Hutchison supporters who have crossed parties to support the former Houston mayor, including Houstonians Matt Simmons, CEO of Simmons & Co. International, and James Flores, CEO of Plains Exploration & Production Co.

In a Republican-red state like Texas, White has to lure crossover voters, big-ticket and otherwise, if he is to have any chance at all of defeating the longest-serving governor in Texas history, although wooing Republicans and independents remains a challenge for the party.

..."I turned to my wife," he recalled, "and I said, 'I don't believe I can support Rick Perry. He's not a bad guy, but I think Bill White would be a better governor.' "

Madden said he first met White in the 1990s. The Amarillo lawyer was involved with finding a peaceful, nonnuclear use for Pantex, the nuclear bomb-making plant near Amarillo, and White was with the U.S. Department of Energy at the time. "Bill White stepped in and gave us a big help," he said.

Later the two men climbed mountains in Colorado together.

"You kind of get good feelings about a guy when you see he can think and get up that mountain," he said.

...Simmons said it was not the governor's stance on issues that propelled him into the White camp.

...Other former Hutchison supporters now with White remain in the closet, so to speak, according to a prominent political fundraiser who works primarily for Republicans and who wishes to remain anonymous himself.

I don’t like Perry, but Bill White? No thanks.

Ditto. Electing a 'Rat governor would be a disaster in a redistricting year. If he gets in, he'll be the last Anglo-Saxon governor of Texas.

Politics is still a “Good ol’ Boys/Girls” network. Once they are in they circle the wagons around their compadres.

Excellent analysis on your part of the article. The people they mention as "crossing over" are Houston businessmen who have probably been doing business with White for twenty years. Yeah, White will sweep his entire circle of friends.

Perry's previous weakness was primarily over the Trans-Texas Corridor. With that issue off the table and no third party candidates to split the vote, Perry will probably win with around 58%. If you asked ten voters, my bet is that fifty percent of them couldn't name the Democrat nominee. Course, if Alvin Greene is any indication, that could be a good thing.

Shoulda been in Austin whenever Ann Richards was running. The Lost in America Spaceman might as well have hung Ann Richards banners from their front doors. Their political analyst predicted that “A Bush Won’t Grow at the Governor’s Mansion.” Course, they also predicted that Rush Limbaugh wouldn’t last past a couple of weeks on the radio. The Spaceman and the Comical ran the entire political spectrum from Ellen Goodman to Molly Ivins.

Perry isn’t very good, but compared to White and Hutchison he’s great.

White is even worse than Hutchison.

From what I’ve seen about White, he’d be even worse than Goodhair.”

Well, I can guarantee you you won’t see much in the Chronicle. He left the city in a horrible financial shape and infrastructure is a disaster. After he loses, you will then hear the new Mayor and the Chronicle blaming White for all the problems that are suddenly going to arise. Maybe not many bumper stickers but lots of yard signs for White in the Village and around Rice. Asked Perry’s campaign office about yard signs to put in the suburbs and was told they don’t have them this time around. Found that interesting a more than a little smug!

I’ve seen small town papers with more pages than the Comical.

Yeah, and their funny papers are funnier, too ..... and their editorials less obnoxious. You have to be an atheist homosexual bigot to get a writing job at the Chron, I think.

The Spaceman and the Comical ran the entire political spectrum from Ellen Goodman to Molly Ivins.

Ah, yes, Molly and her straight razor with the name "Bush" acid-etched on the blade (with her tongue) .....

Well, that was then -- nowadays, the Chron is much more selective; they run the spectrum from A to E now.

Manufactured leftist horsesh*t.

Perry is about 32% conservative, but White is 99% commie.

I’m not surprised that many TX “Republicans” are for Bill White. They are not thinking about the redistricting in 2011 of the legislature and the U.S. House. White could turn 44 percent Democrat legislative votes into majorities.

I don’t think Harris Co. will vote Republican; it has a lot of Democrat Katrina refugees, who helped elect Cao in New Orleans by being away.

I don’t think you heard that right. I’m in Houston, and Pat Gray—one of Beck’s sidekicks—is from here, as well. He knows better than most how BAD White is.

Even if this were the case, proves the point that Kay supporters are LIBERAL because SHE is a lib! Haven’t been able to stomach her myself since she first ran 20 years ago, though I’ve had to hold my breath while voting for her a few times (never in a primary, though :)
