Some GOP stalwarts plan to vote for (Democrat) Bill White (for Texas Governor)
Houston Chronicle ^ | June 18, 2010, 12:01AM | JOE HOLLEY

...When his candidate for governor, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, fell to Gov. Rick Perry, he switched his support to Democrat Bill White.

Madden is one of a number of former Hutchison supporters who have crossed parties to support the former Houston mayor, including Houstonians Matt Simmons, CEO of Simmons & Co. International, and James Flores, CEO of Plains Exploration & Production Co.

In a Republican-red state like Texas, White has to lure crossover voters, big-ticket and otherwise, if he is to have any chance at all of defeating the longest-serving governor in Texas history, although wooing Republicans and independents remains a challenge for the party.

..."I turned to my wife," he recalled, "and I said, 'I don't believe I can support Rick Perry. He's not a bad guy, but I think Bill White would be a better governor.' "

Madden said he first met White in the 1990s. The Amarillo lawyer was involved with finding a peaceful, nonnuclear use for Pantex, the nuclear bomb-making plant near Amarillo, and White was with the U.S. Department of Energy at the time. "Bill White stepped in and gave us a big help," he said.

Later the two men climbed mountains in Colorado together.

"You kind of get good feelings about a guy when you see he can think and get up that mountain," he said.

...Simmons said it was not the governor's stance on issues that propelled him into the White camp.

...Other former Hutchison supporters now with White remain in the closet, so to speak, according to a prominent political fundraiser who works primarily for Republicans and who wishes to remain anonymous himself.

This Houston Comical bit of "journalism" should be counted as a donation to the White campaign.

The radio partner of Beck was talking about supporting White.

Not sure if that is current as it was a while back.

Bill White would be a lock-step DemocRat. There is no longer any such thing as a “conservative,” or even a “moderate” DemocRat. They are all despicable socialist commies.

When his candidate for governor, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, fell to Gov. Rick Perry, he switched his support to Democrat Bill White.

Then he was never really a republican to begin with.

Perry is lucky this will be a GOP year nationally. Otherwise, I think he’d be in trouble.

He’d be in big trouble. Too bad there wasn’t a first-level challenger in the primary.

It’s like the “Republicans” who professed to support Al Gore’s platform 101%, never having found a politician they agreed with as much.

They were Republicans in the primary for McCain in 2000 but they put their money up for Gore’s recount when their candidate lost the election.

Sounds like the race has tightened a bit. Rasmussen now has it 48-40 Perry.

I’m not a big Perry fan but it sounds like White is your typical rat. And I used to think Matt Simmons was a pretty bright guy but he sounds like a real dip based on this article. Perry needs to thank zer0, pelosi etc for what might otherwise be a losing cause.
