BP Plc (BP.L) (BP.N) plans to increase the collection of oil at the site of the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico to about 20,000 barrels per day, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Monday.
Thad Allen, the Coast Guard admiral heading the federal relief effort, said BP would be sending in another craft to increase the amount of oil that can be recovered. On Sunday BP captured 11,100 barrels of oil with its containment cap.

It seems to me that BP is going out of its way to keep producing from that well rather than permanently seal it. Maybe our government is in the way, I dunno, but I don’t really think the folks along the coast care how much is captured.
That’s how arrogant and out of touch the nicely dressed bozo boys at the top behave on a daily basis.

No can do. Regulations prohibit dumping the separated water back into the Gulf.
Oil is vacuumed up with seawater and separated on the ships with the clean water discharged back to the sea. If it has a sheen the fines are huge to the captain of the vessel. Guess it is better to have all that oil in the gulf than have a slight sheen on the excess water that would soon biodegrade,

I’d bet if you asked the folks along the coast they’d tell you they damn well care how much is captured.
They cut the top off of the crimped pipe. A larger spewing orifice is going to have a larger spewput.

You might check the OilDrum to see if that solution has been proposed....lots of experts over there ,...could help you refine your suggestion.
I've heard this argument from a number of places that BP is working to keep producing oil from this rather than just cap it and abandon it. I've seen a number of technical descriptions that it is not going to stop leaking at least some oil until the relief well is completed. It seems to make sense that it is very difficult to just "plug the hole" but some would argue that BP is just a greedy oil company looking to profit at any cost.
What I haven't seen is some explanation for the economic justification of keeping the well producing if BP could seal and abandon it right now. It would seem that this well would need to produce more than any other well in the gulf and the price of oil to skyrocket in order to offset the costs of collecting the oil, processing the oil, containing the still leaking oil, and cleaning up the gulf. Even if you take out the liability for the current damage done, I don't see BP being able to profit from this venture by salvaging some oil that costs them more than the ongoing costs of this operation. Perhaps, there is some magic reasoning that I'm missing that I don't understand a greedy oil company working so hard to lose money by spending and risking possibly over a billion $ to make a few million $.
You should have called them as I’m sure they’d have paid top dollar to find an easy way to do this capture. Money left laying on the table. LOL.
