This is an on-going situation keep checking kvoa.com for the latest updates.
A diversion?
Right-wing radicals no doubt.
When did this occur? Is the article dated 6/4/10?
Actually it not...there are numerous roads in northern NH with km/miles listed. Same with northern ME.
Or Oregon...
Why the hell is AZ marking in km? That went out with the 70’s.
Nashville had Km and Mi in the late 70’s. They had been removed (Km) a long time ago.
See below:

“Interstate 19 is unique among US Interstates, because signed distances are given in meters (hundreds or thousands as distance-to-exit indications) or kilometers (as distance-to-destination indications), and not miles. However, the speed limit signs give speeds in miles-per-hour. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), metric signs were originally placed because of the push toward the metric system in the United States at the time of the original construction of the highway.”

“Citing motorist confusion arising from the metric signs on I-19, Arizona DOT’s Tucson district announced that new signs on I-19 would use United States customary units. To avoid the cost of replacing the metric signs all at once, signs would be replaced in specific areas of the freeway during construction projects in those areas.[7] New signs were put into place between Exit 99 (Ajo Way) and Exit 101 (Interstate 10) in 2004 after the completion of the new Interstate 10Interstate 19 interchange.”
The Congress authorized the use of metric units in the United States in 1866.

However, all attempts at metrication in the United States have failed miserably.
With the lone exception of soda, cola or pop depending where you live.
Here are some visuals of the highway (not from this incident).

What a waste of money, putting a mile marker every 1/2 mile. My husband and I drove through there a couple of weeks ago and decided it must have been Obama Federal Stimulus Money, looking for a place to waste it.

I-19 open today after bomb scare
NEAR NOGALES - Interstate 19 is open again today after closing for several hours last night because of a suspcious abandoned vehicle.
According to the Department of Public Safety, northbound Interstate 19 at KM 22 near north Rio Rico was closed because of the bomb scare.
It caused major traffic headaches, but the vehicle was towed without incident. DPS says the vehicles appears to be harmless.
I-19 reopened around 12:30 this morning.
W/ just a few redneck friends, and just a few beers, those km signs would all disappear.
Here in Virginia I-95 has markers every 1/10th mile.
Now that there is some big bucks!
I-55 from St. Louis to the Arkansas line has markers every 1/5 of a mile. I, too, thought them a waste of money (they were put up before Obama) until I realized that wherever you are, you can see one. So if you need to call for help you can tell 911 exactly where you are. The signs include the I55 symbol, the direction and the milage.
And off-off topic when I return to California, I am amazed that they don’t have milage markers.
With the lone exception of soda, cola or pop depending where you live.Engine displacements are also metric, liters not cu.inches anymore.
Also to further frustrate the shade tree mechanic some of the nuts and bolts are also metric on American made vehicles.
And off-off topic when I return to California, I am amazed that they dont have milage markers. We don't? That's news to me.
We have these little verticle white paddle looking things that tell you what county you're in (abbreviated), the highway RTE # and how far from the county line you are in 10ths.
