I-55 from St. Louis to the Arkansas line has markers every 1/5 of a mile. I, too, thought them a waste of money (they were put up before Obama) until I realized that wherever you are, you can see one. So if you need to call for help you can tell 911 exactly where you are. The signs include the I55 symbol, the direction and the milage.

And off-off topic when I return to California, I am amazed that they don’t have milage markers.

We don't? That's news to me.

We have these little verticle white paddle looking things that tell you what county you're in (abbreviated), the highway RTE # and how far from the county line you are in 10ths.
