And off-off topic when I return to California, I am amazed that they don’t have milage markers.
We don't? That's news to me.

We have these little verticle white paddle looking things that tell you what county you're in (abbreviated), the highway RTE # and how far from the county line you are in 10ths.

I grew up in California—I think I know what you are referring to—a white paddle with a black top. So it’s kind of a secret code! I never realized they were mileposts.

Our mile posts here in Missouri tell you the distance to the state line or the end of interstate. Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee work the same. The exits are numbered to the nearest mile. Makes it very simple to know how far you are from your destination.
