California would keep a permanent record of anyone buying a shotgun or rifle under legislation passed Thursday by the Assembly.
The measure would expand state law by adding long-gun buyers to a state Justice Department database that currently can identify only handgun purchasers.
Opponents contend the bill is the latest in a long line of bureaucratic hurdles designed to discourage gun ownership.
"It's none of government's flippin' business what guns I own, or why I own them," said Sam Paredes, executive director of Gun Owners of California.
But supporters of Assembly Bill 1810 claim it will help police officers track long guns at emergency or crime scenes, and it could help identify felons who own them illegally. 3W2OPENCARRY
RICH PEDRONCELLI Associated Press Lori Saldaña, D-San Diego, calls on fellow Assembly members Tuesday to support her measure to restrict the open display of firearms. Call Jim Sanders, Bee Capitol Bureau, (916) 326-5538.
"It will make your community safer, and make officers safer," said Juliet Leftwich of Legal Community Against Violence, which co-sponsored the bill.
AB 1810 now goes to the Senate after passing the Assembly, 43-29, with no Republican support. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken no position.
The bill would not alter existing requirements that buyers of handguns or long guns abide by a 10-day waiting period, undergo a criminal background check and provide a fingerprint or thumbprint.

When they can’t solve real problems, invent one.
Glad I left ...
So this way, when an evil convicted felon goes to a gun retailer on the up-and-up, we’d know about, right? :)
And this Nanny/Police-State continues to be built under a SUPPOSED "Republican" governor.
What an ABSOLUTE, UN-AMERICAN, FREEDOM-ROBBING POS Arnold has turned out to be.
Yes and I believe Hillary signed something with the adminstrations approval to limit gun sales. press has been very quiet about it...where does nra stand.
Maybe it’s time we play their game. Lets boycott CA for their gun and immigration stance. I think AZ should start. I never liked visiting the state anyway. Just piles of dirt next to lousy beaches. If you want a real beach try FL or SC.
I feel sorry for legitimate gun dealers like Mack Tilton and Creedmore Sports, among others, that support the competitive shooter. Long arms are their expertise.
Like a soldier who refuses to obey an illegal order is justified, so is a law abiding citizen who refuses to obey an illegal law.
Buy out of state, keep it quiet and keep it loaded.
What a pant load. California strives to be the next England.
Eventually we’ll be as safe as Chicago.
Fools. Criminals don't obey gun-registration laws.
What's a "real" beach? Blistering hot sand covered in people and towels? Try Oregon. The water ain't warm, but the scenery's great and you may have a couple of miles to yourself.
The NRA needs to LEAVE states like CA. By them remaining there and continuing to do business, they make these laws appear legitimate.
Inagine MLK in the 1960’s doing business as usual in the south.
As the nations largest gun lobby, they need to make a choice....and to me it appears money is more important than upholding the 2A to them.

The NRA was infiltrated by scumbags long ago and as long as they endose a single democrap for any elected office they can KMA.
“The water ain’t warm, but the scenery’s great and you may have a couple of miles to yourself.”
Not bad but they’re still too much like CA for me. If they were a conservative state I would move there.
WHEN will this California killing spree by long guns be ended?!
If you moved here, we'd be more conservative. :) The cities blow, for the most part. The rural lefties shut the hell up when you tell them to, or hit them with rational arguements to counter their BS.
Do these laws apply to illegal MS-13 gang members?
Just think: soon California will know more about law abiding gun owners than it will about murderous, violent, antisocial illegal border crossers.
